Newbie questions on new system

Yes, I am a n00b! :)

I have SKY+ and enjoy what I have currently (a couple of subs).

But I have heard that I can get more channels outside of the UK? And I need to get some satellite system installed which then I can obtain channels from Eurobird/hotbird?

The system includes a motorised dish and a reciever.

Questions:

Where can I get the equipment from?
Roughly how much will it cost?
What channels can I recieve from them?
Do I need to pay any subs or anything?

how does the system work?

A1: Will leave it to UK members to answer this
A2: Same as A1
A3: Consult Lyngsat for all the channels and PACKAGES (click on P, otherwise you will not see the channels in the packages)
A4: No need to pay if you can live with FTA channels only, but it would be nice if you pay for the subs, as there are huge number of encrypted channels and you will only get frustrated when the TV screen is black.
Look into the Packages section and Adult Section to get some info.
 
Thanks. I went to maplin electronics today in the UK and they are providing the entire system for around £200 GBP with a motorised dish.... sounds good.

but question is - does it matter the type of reciever? What are the general things I should be looking for in the reciever?
 
Beware when buying complete systems at budget prices, very often the dish and wall bracket are low quality or entirely unsuitable respectively.

Receiver wise, if all you want to watch is Free To Air channels (mostly non-English language) then the type of receiver Maplin sells will be fine (although not what I'd choose), for other options, you need to have a good scan around the forum and see what's available.

You will sooner or later need a slot for inserting a subscription smartcard.
So buy a receiver which has CI or embedded slots.

I would say that it isn't a given that someone would need this.

If all someone wants is FTA tv - then they can save money by getting a FTA only box.

Yes, FTA receiver is good for a while, until there is a need for watching a subscription package and therefore one ends up buying a receiver with CI or embedded slot in addition to the FTA.
Let us say for the sake of argument that a good FTA receiver costs 50 Pounds and one with CI or embedded is 90 Pounds, so he would save 40 Pounds by buying the FTA receiver.
But if after 3months to 1 year he needs a receiver with a CI slot, he would end up spending extra 90 Pounds with total cost 90+50=140 Pounds.
The way I see it is he can save 50 pounds by NOT buying FTA receiver to start with.
