Hi everyone, I'm a newbie but was so impressed with instal info on this site I've decided to instal motorised system myself, house rear faces directly south. Lat 53.4189 lon -2.4298.
Looked at a superstore selling 1.1m dish ,primesat pr3600B motor,0.1db primesat lnb £160. ( would 1m do?) . Technomate Tm5402 mk3 hd rec £110. Does this sound about right. Also offers pre programmed option ( save hours of labour ?) £20 - this sounds like a good idea for a newbie,am I right?

Hiya John welcome to the forum. Ive moved this to a better place on the forum where it will be seen by more of the members.

WRT the dish the first question to ask yourself is "what do you want to receive" If its just a good selection of the stronger satellites then a 1m dish will be a reasonable introduction to the hobby.

The Technomate 5402 is a good receiver - quite a few of the members here use them.

Pre programming, well at some point you need to learn how to set up the receiver from scratch, its a bit tedious setting a box up but its always a useful thing to do so you get to know how a box works "under the bonnet".
 
Always look in the classifieds, you can often find a bargain there , and sometimes on this site you under the other section you can find equipment that performs just as well as new stuff, knowing it has been working well in another person's setup. If you have some spare cash, try investing in an inline meter, it can provide clues when something just isn't working as it should.
 
Having a south facing garden is always an advantage, especially if you're luck enough to have an open, clear, south facing garden, which will allow you to fit a ground mounted system.
It makes installation, and maintenance, so much easier.
Check with sites, like dishpointer.com, to see where it's best, to site your dish, to be able to get the most satellites, East, and West, you can also check satellite sites, like lyngsat, to see how many satellites are available, to you, the most popular probably being, 28.2E, 23.5E, 19.2E, 13E, 5E, and 0.8W, but there are so many more, you can receive, in your location, and part of the fun is finding different satellites, and channels, yourself.
 
Why not relocate to a tall mountain nearby ?
