@sat-tv-fan This is how I started on Ka Ka with Prodelin/Viasat 1.2m Band B
It's stil the cheapest way of getting Newsnet that I know of. In order of difficulty:

1 Get a Gilat AN8002 ODU (outdoor unit) form an old broadband set-up, remove the polariser. Use only the RX port (ignore the TX it won't do anything). This works but the ODU is heavy. Total cost ~£30 for ODU + £50 for a 1.2m offset, less if you are lucky. The dish that comes with the ODU is too small for Newsnet.

2 Remove the LNB and attach the feed directly (see link above). This gets you another dB or so but it's no longer waterproof (look for @John posts to waterproof it)

3 Tune the filter better at 18.5GHz by adding a piece of 2mm thick PTFE over the top (shaded red in picture). You can see what's happening by looking at the noise level vs. frequency. The resulting response is not flat but improves Newsnet by 2-3dB. You can get a bit more with other tweaking but it's physically more awkward.

4 Replace the crystal with 27MHz one to move the LO to 17280MHz (shifts the IF into the normal band)

Note: options 1-3 put the IF frequency of Newsnet 18557 at 307MHz so you need a tuner that goes that low e.g. TBS 6983/6903.

Also, have a look at @John and my other posts mentioning "Gilat".

Good advice :Y .... here's what it would look like for option 1. , which is the easiest thing to do, mounted on a CM 1.2 test dish earlier on in the year to document it's performance before any mods are done to it. Removed the original poloriser and just re-bolted the scalar feed to the main ODU lump and it does work pretty good without having to do any internal mods on the Gilat unit. It would need a decent 1.2 Offset dish to be able to support the weight though as Graham said.

OK many thanks for all this but it looks rather daulting to me and where would I get a Gilat AN8002 ODU from anyway ?

Very simple if you use option 1.
Get them on Ebay. Search for "satellite broadband" and/or "satellite internet". The Gilats are mainly from SES but look at the pictures as many sellers do not describe the ODU.

.. Also, what iv'e done in the past when the seller states it's for collection only due to it's size, dish + ODU+ possibly modem+ possibly cables etc is to ask the seller to unbolt the ODU and feed and just send that through the post at a cost of around £11 extra. They have obliged in the past.... especially when you remind them that they could possible re-list everything else again that you do not require. It's also important that you establish from the seller that the model of ODU is a Gilat AN8002, which can be seen on a label on the back of the ODU. Any other model number will not be suitable to have a sniff at the 18GHz Newsnet frequencies. If you decide to go forward with this idea and you spot a dish etc, let us know first before you part with any money and we will be able to say if it's the right choice.

Re: the first picture of the Tooway system - There's no indication of what model the Gilat ODU is and also it's expensive. The correct unit can be obtained a lot cheaper . The second Hughes unit shown has two types of ODU's shown in the sellers pics - the first pic in the sequence looks like a Gilat ODU and is an advertising picture, the other pics from the seller look like the actual installed Hughes units which are of no use to you.

@sat-tv-fan this might be one but the pics are not good enough to see the model number: Satellite Broadband Internet Dish And Fixings GILAT EDGE II -c Aries BRAND NEW | eBay It's also quite expensive, although if the seller just bought it new, I doubt they will drop much.

This might also be one but it's silly money: Complete Ses satellite broadband internet equipment | eBay

This one is strange: Complete Tooway satellite broadband internet equipment | eBay As John says, it shows a Gilat on the wall and the modem is the one that normally goes with a Gilat but the ODU on the grass is Tooway. That may be why they had trouble selling it.

You don't want: Viasat, Tooway, Gilat AN8004 or most Hughes

I had an email back from av comm in Australia. They are selling DRO Ka band lnb's for £225...so much closer to the satshop price anyway Ka Band DRO LNB 18.2 – 19.2 GHz – Av-Comm

Don't want to pittle on your strawberrys too soon .. BUT- that may not be the final total price to come out of the piggy bank. The units themselves are by XMW of South Korea. Iv'e had quite a few items from Gary @ AV-Comm and can highly recommend their service. The last thing i had from them was exactly the same item you have highlighted, i'll dig out the invoice when i can to get a more accurate final cost once you have added the vat & import duties etc.

So with the feedhorn I see also included this is all I need isn't it apart from a decent sized off set dish ?

Just managed to dig out the customs charges for my order just over a year ago and they were £46.21 to pay.

The white XMW cone feed that is shown on the web site can be obtained a lot cheaper than that from a supplier in France, around £50 give or take a tad .. which again a few of us have used and recommended. The cone feed according to AV-Comm are for Prime Focus dishes but we have used them on Off-set dishes with pretty good results and they use a 40mm outer barrel shape which makes it very easy to fit onto a standard 40mm lnb holder that usually gets supplied with dishes.
** Querie ... was that quoted price of 225 definitely in GB Pounds or Australian dollars ?, ... the exchange rate is not too bad at the moment .

Do they allow for Ka band you mean ? The SX88+ certainly does anyway for the 4 different bands even, not looked at the others

Ah yes ok so we are looking at around the 500 mark then I guess once I've got say a 1.2 dish. Think it has to be the ebay bits mentioned btw the quote was in Oz dollars, I just used the xe app to convert...
