Nichelle Nichols, who played Lieutenant Uhura on ‘Star Trek,’ has died. She was one of the first black women to have a TV role which showed her in a position of authority rather than stereotypical subservient roles.

Later, in the third series, she and William Shatner shared the first interracial kiss to be shown on TV. In order to get the scene past the TV censor they had to be "forced" by a outside agency.
