I have been having a problem with an f5s. I have been recomended to get a "no signal fix" type lead from fleebay.
To those who know about electrical items, would an attenuator perform the same job or are these items for completly different purposes?

Attenuators seem built better and are cheaper than these "no signal fix" type leads, and so may be a better option if they perform the same job.

Attenuators are for reducing signal strength.

The F5S fix is not for reducing signal strength, but to knock a small fixed value off the 13/18v power supply and polarisation switching voltage to the LNB.

Not the same thing.
