Hi Everyone,

Today I purchased a new complete satellite system to use here in spain.
I am using a thomson sky decoder and a 1.4m dish ( i have been assured that in my location the dish is correct) The problem I have is, once all connected there is no signal, I do understand that I need to have the dish pointing in the right direction (astra for bbc itv etc) however on many different web sites is says that I should still get a small reading in the signal strength bar, which I do not... I checked all the wiring and that all seemed to be fine, I then checked the LNB by connecting it to an old cheap digi box and pointed the dish at Astra 1e etc and I was able to tune in and see sky news without any problem.
So the question is, is the new thomson sky box at fault? im not using a sky card in it and have been assured that I can watch bbc etc without one.

I did try for along time today, in tuning to the correct satellite but without any luck at all. I also used a metronic satellite finder which acted like it had found the correct satellite

Hi, which part of Spain are you in, the nearest large town will do?
 
not very far from torrevieja. The company I purchased the kit from are putting alot of them in around here so I thought Id save a few bob and do it myself. All was going well until the signal issue

2.4M for Astra 2d for that region :D

The reception map I have seen for Astra 2D in Spain indicates that a 2m or 2.4m is required. The BBC channels are on 2D.

You won't have a problem with Eurobird 1 though, and the the other Astra south beams, I would imagine that you would get the north beams too.

To align the dish to get some sort of signal, maybe start with one of the Eurobird1 transponders like 11642V, this should be very strong with your dish.
 
True, but a local supplier is installing 1.3 and having no problem, but in a few miles from here it does step back up to 2.4

I just need to know if I should be seeing something in the signal strength bar before I tune into the satellite as, on a couple of sites, (one even had a picture showing this). is this critical to have that?

I was going to buy a 2.4 but I was told no need (he had 2.4 in stock) the 1.3 would be all I need (he has a whole page in the local paper with the dish size 1.3 mentioned too)

Not sure if I mentioned it my dish is actually a 1.4 not 1.3
 
You should have no problems pulling in the North & South beams at least.

With that in mind ........

if using a Sl<y box and seeing the default TP, then the screen should indicate
> Network ID 0002
> Transport Stream 07d4
> some indication of signal strength & quality in bars

when signal locked onto 28e.

in the signal test page, the two top bar scales are blank, but I did read somewhere that the signal strength bar should have at least something it it even though the others are all blank, does that mean that there is a fault?
 
No, it means you haven't got a signal lock.

The 'Lock Indicator' will show OK when your on 28east
 
It could mean you are pointing at 19.2 East as well if sky news is all you can get
 
Errm, you said that you picked up Sky news from Astra 1. This would indicate that the equipment is working to some extent.

But perhaps he does not realise that Astra 2 is at 28.2 East and he will have to move his dish further East
 
I just checked the dish and LNB on 19.2 just to check to make sure that was all ok while using a cheap old digi box I have.

Then after that I went back to trying to get a signal on 28.2 using the new thomson sky box, and got nothing. I did use a simple inline satellite finder and picked up what I thought was the satellite but still nothing showed on the sky digi box

............. you say Astra 1e above and then you receive Sky news.... maybe a spelling error, lol Sky news is on 19e

You may have pulled in 19e at first and tried for 28e but have stumbled across Astra 1e @ 23.5e instead of 28e....it's bang in the middle :D
 
Yeah sorry, I meant 19e and everything was fine (using the cheap digi box) and just be sure I used dish pointer .com to give me a clear idea of where i needed to point the dish. for both locations.

Also the cheap digi box has the satellites listed in it all you have to do is select and point and once your on it you get a continous tone and then you get pictures. so am I just getting the right spot or could the thomson be at fault?

having said that I have just looked at dish pointer and it could be possible that I am hitting Astra 1d at 23.5e

I will try again in the morning, I just wished I knew if the thomson is ok
 
Unsure in your location but you could be on 26 East. Try slightly east and down a bit. Also the skew of the lnb must be set. When looking at the front of the dish it should be about 7 O´Clock I would guess for your location.
 
Why not try the FTA box on 28E, instead of the Sky box? You won't have to worry about default transponders etc, and will easily be able to flick through the transponder list to see what you do and don't receive.

Very easy to check which sat, by cross-matching channel names and frequencies with those listed on lyngsat.
 
fell asleep last night, sorry everyone for not responding. I am going to give it a another go now. I did try for a while yesterday using the free to air box but gave up with that as I thought it might not be good enough, the reason I thought that, I am using a dish that is smaller than this area would suggest and that the FTA box may not be senseitive enough.

I am new to playing around with dishes etc although it is great when it all works (the cheap 65 euro dish and fta box) when I get stuck like this, I am not really sure what should or should not happen, so thank you everyone for your help..
 
Whilst aligning from Astra 19e to Astra 28e, try scanning this transponder:

12.422 H, 27.5, 2/3 QVC UK = 28.2e
12.422 H, 27.5, 3/4 WDR = 19.2e

You won't have problems with anything in between using this Tp.
