Got struck by lightning again for the second time in as many months. Sony tv, Vantage receiver, Phillips DECT phone, Brother laser printer, Homeplug, WiFi modem/router, V-box all a dead loss. Haven't notice anything else except my Phillips DVD hard drive recorder is getting very hot.

:(
last year in september happens the same, and lighting hits my egis motor, damage was aproximently 1500€
but the household insurance pay it,after long time!
the weather intensitivy espasaly in the mautains, can be very dangerous, the best way to protect is swtich off the main fuse,of the room where the electronic is,all others did not help..
there is no protection that protect 100%..
the advertising say this, but its not true..!

what about your dish motor 1224, is that blown too with the strike on everything ?

that would be one of the things I wouldn't want to get done as they are no more of them around.

last year .was a very big lighting strike,it hits the main cable power line,of local power operator,in a radius of 4 km,the complete valley was dark
and oper was interrupted for one hour, until the activate a 2.emercency line!
near my house was coming out fire out of the power mast,my nabour was watching television football, and his plasma was also should up..
so,in other words, the worst case scenario happens only one time,)i hope)
since that i always replug the complete fuse..!
no this motor still working,is installed on another dish(grogory)the lighting comes over the nitec controller box of egis, and runs in the cable, and burn the sensor inside motor, and mainbaord itself!
egis very sensitive on high impulse
sure yes, when smr 1224 should be fault,i also dont know, what i should do,in reverse i have the smo 36 motor!
when the optical sensor should stop working, someone told me,that is posible,to remove the optical sensor from a computer laser mouse, and put it in the motor, someone try this out?

Sorry to hear that ................ all fully insured, despite the earlier strike, I hope?

Sorry to hear that - Huevos -
thats a lot of good equipment to lose all at one time

regards

Sorry to hear that too Huevos. Hope you can get quick replacements.

The lightning strike has just jumped about 5 miles through the air. A couple of mm air gap in a switch isnt going to offer much protection from a direct strike! Sounds like you need a properly installed lightning conductor like church spires have.

Sorry to hear that bud - hope to hear you are back up and running again soon.

Really sorry to hear this Heuvos. Kind of disproves the old saying about "lightning never strikes the same place twice". Lets hope you're up and running again soon.

The v-box shows "ER2" which means "no feedback from the dish". Normally that means the dish is at the hardware limits, or the reed switch is blown... but the reality is it's just the v-box faulty. I've got a Manhattan ST500 receiver here and when I tried that it drives the dish fine. If I leave the v-box switched on it gets hot enough to fry an egg on top after about 10 minutes. The Vantage box is completely dead (no lights, nothing). Same with the router and Homeplug. The television is an old Sony. It powers up to a magenta screen with some strange scan lines, and the lights on the front just keep flashing. A Manhattan XT-M and a Phillips DVD/hard drive recorder that were in the same cabinet seem to work normally. Not sure about the printer, it could be the WiFi print server at fault. The DECT phone base is faulty but the handset is fine.

As for turning off the main switch I doubt that would have helped as the strike was inside the property. Anyway it would have been impossible to predict. It was a lovely sunny day then a big grey cloud came over. No rain had started to fall. Then there was an almighty flash and bang. Then it rain cats and dogs for about ten minutes and then reverted back to a nice clear day.

I've got everything I need to sort it out to an operational level here already (except I need a television set), but right now I want to leave it all as is for the insurance "expert" to have a look at. Policy is "new for old" so lets wait and see what they offer me.

Insurance companies are the same the world over - they'll try to find something that they can wriggle out of paying for if they can.

Good luck!

Just had a phone call. The guy said he is the repair man from the insurance company and is going to come and "fix" all my stuff. This should be good! He's coming at 2pm.

Perhaps he could be a Guest on Forum and tells us his "Tricks of the Trade" .............................. !!

Bad news.

I hope the 'optimist' has visited and agrees to a rapid payout.

Ok! 2pm turned into 5pm; normal here. Two guys came and after about 2 minutes they decided they couldn't fix anything on the spot so would have to take it all away. I got receipts for everything and they put it all in the van. They say they will ring Thursday and if they can't fix anything I will get compensated. Anyway, lets see what happens.

Wish you luck with all that, I hope they stick to their word and the wording of the policy

Sorry to hear about the lightning strike, that's one of the things that worries me about having satellite dishes high up, cos they're a great path to ground, and lighting likes to follow the path of least resistance, which usually is the equipment... :(

Repairing it all though I'd say is going to be pretty unlikely, there'll be so many blown components that it'd be more cost effective to just replace the damaged goods rather than pull out every last component and rebuild from scratch... :(

As for a lightning conductor, well, it's a good idea, but, it should be placed well away from anywhere like electrical cables (power, telephone, TV or other cables), as there is the issue of electromagnetic induction, meaning that lightning can strike nearby, but the cables act like the copper windings in a generator, and pass that generated electricity on to Ground, so you still end up with a high voltage surge which can be just as damaging as the lightning itself...

Hope it all gets sorted out quickly though, nothing worse than a blown up TV... :)

Yup, hope everything turns out for the best. On a trivial note, as a lad I once had a crystal set fry when my 150 foot long wire aerial took a surge from an indirect lightning strike (didn't have my earphones on at the time )

who is church spires?
i dont know him)
the cord that spread the power was swiched off and the nitec controll box also, means analouge sat is right, the lithing jumps over 2 swtiches.!

here the dishes, was normaly not include in the house hold insurace, but you can include it,and add with another indenture!
aproximently 5000€ protected,for 120€/year,when i need higher i have to pay more!
it also protect the dish, when it would be warped after a wind crash, one time happen, around 7 year ago!
but you have to clear up everything in detail, what the pay and what not,if the forgot,or not include something, then insurance want pay it!
i think everywhere the same !
