The world has truly gone stark, staring bonkers:

The lamp in our Microwave Oven has been flickering a lot recently - clearly either loose in its recptacle or about to fail

Either way, I thought I'd whip the casing off the Oven and check/replace - a 5 minute job?

NO.

Released all the Posidrive screws holding the case to the chassis, bar two .............

............. These final two (the crucial two, obviously) seemed to have small Torx heads.

Ok, got loads of tools for those.

Nope - they have such a shallow depth that clearly they were assembled on a special jig.

After half-an-hour of cursing and trying all sorts of "engineering solutions" short of a firkin big hammer, I went for cutting my own slots using a metal grade hacksaw blade by hand (couldn't get the hacksaw frame close).

Another thirty minutes later, I finally managed to get a tool to bite and remove the screw.

Going to tackle the other one now.

Who the hell thinks it good design to deny access for even routine things like lamp changes?

Utterly bonkers.

The Oven only cost £35 .......... imagine a less persistent punter giving up and taking it to a man who can: Imagine how much that would cost.
 
ive got a old hp printer, changed an ink one time (because it had run out) on turning it on it had developed a ink nozzle fault refer to dealer ! i got straight on to a search engine and found this wasnt an uncommon fault. it took me 2hrs of trawling before i found the answer a simple reset in a hidden menu. a lot of the tales of woe i read resulted in people giving up and buying new because it was only £40 for a new one or it was too hard to look for the answer !! tips around the country must be full of good gear that just needed time and patience to fix. my printers still going 18 months later!!
 
I'm sure there'll be lots more tales along the same lines before the day is out!

Anyway, finally got into the beast and one portion of the filament is loose - no much longer for this world.

It's a 20W SES E14 fitting lamp, and the spares box only has 15W ones in it, so I'll fit one of those for now and get onto fleabay.

Amazing, though, two hours work to replace a 50p component.
 
Ah, some good news.

20W SES E14 fitting bulbs are as rare as rocking-horse poo unless you get them complete with base (they didn't fool me with that one - a couple of deft tweaks with fine-nosed pliers got the entire assembly out!), and vendors sell 15W bulbs instead.

And .................


................ I've already got two of those!

Yeah, "No user serviceable parts inside" just means "We've made it more difficult for you to get inside" which is usually followed up with a nice drill bit going through screwheads to get rid of them stupid security screws, like I did with our old nuker for exactly the same reason, bulb had gone, and all I had spare was a small CFL which fit perfectly and worked fine until it got left behind when we moved (dunno what happened to it afterwards)... :)

I can't wait for the day when the majority of the population of the planet becomes too thick to change a bulb in a lamp or ceiling light, simply through being denied the expertise through nanny-state elven-safety blocks on user-servicing... :-rofl2
 
Thought better of leaving out fasteners where the security screws were and went up to the den to find some suitable Posidrive replacements ........................




Well, last week I tidied up all my screws and other stuff that SWMBO can't understand why I keep "just in case"


Took me ages to find the packet with all the "small, sundry" bits in.


Got it done, though.

We are the the TAS (throw away society)
They want your dosh ..and service engineers and DIYers can go to the wall ..
Its called churn ..and its what drives the economy ,,unfortunately

Speaking of bulb changes ..
didn't it come out during the 'MPs expenses scandal' that some prat MP had declared on his expenses ..
£100 to get an engineer into his home ..to change a sodding light bulb..
No wonder we are in a mess ...
They can talk the talk ..mostly bullcrap ..but cant change a light bulb..
Now ...I wonder what it costs to change a 3 pin plug ..
second mortgage ?????????
