Hello everyone :) I hope you can help.

I have a Thomson Sky+ Digital Receiver that has been functioning well for the last couple of years. In the last week some channels have stopped working.

These include: Channel 5, Sky One, Bloomberg, Sky Atlantic.

The signal strength on the services menu is up and the signal is locked. Channels like BBC1,2,ITV,C4,Sky News work perfectly well.

I have tried the off/on troubleshooters favourite, but with no luck. I have a quad LNB and I tried the other two spare connectors as a long shot which didn't work.

From my frantic Googling it would appear that the above channels come from Astra 2A. So I am guessing the dish has somehow come out of alignment very slightly.

Do you think that is the problem? or am I way off?

Thanks in advance :)

Almost certainly capacitor failure in the psu unit. Pop the cover off and see if the caps are bulging.

Keep your fingers well clear!!!!

You have a matter of weeks or maybe a few months before the box fails completely

Yes, Smoothing Capacitor failure is very common indeed with these Thomson boxes.

Some info on the causes here:

The capacitor plague made interesting reading, very enlightening.

A quick update, I ordered a replacement set of capacitors and fitted them yesterday. Everything has been working since then, so a complete success.

Thanks again for your help, much appreciated. :D

Result, well done.:)

Excellent news - thanks for letting us know.

The box will probably run fine for years now :)
