Noob - not sure where my installation has gone wrong...

my first attempt at installation, I'm pointing an 90cm Triax dish at Intelsat 1002. There's nothing blocking its line of site.

I used online guides to arrive at azimuth angle of 180.53 and elevation of 31.38 degrees. Looking at the Triax site my dish has an offset of 26 deg so I am trying to get 5 deg along the LNB arm - I think that's right, although I didn't know about offset for my first few attempts.

I have one of the basic satellite finders. With the volume turned up almost all the way around, I can get a reading of 7/10 on the scale. I'm not sure if this represents a strong or a weak signal.

Anyway, when I connect the receiver to the TV and scan Intelsat 1002, I get nothing at all - 0% on both strength and quality.

I expected it to be fiddly, but thought I might get a least a little bit of something to work on! There is probably something basic I've got wrong here, I'd be very grateful for any advice. Thanks!
 
You've generally got the right idea re. Az/El/Offset so it's just a matter of patience and fine tuning.

But you'll get a strident squawk even with the dish pointing at random .............. It is significant changes you are looking for.

I use a cheap needle meter on occasion, but do be aware that the short cable stub is fit only for the bin: Make up a short length of cable yourself, to replace the supplied one - the inner is so thin and flimsy that it can break, or it can fail to make contact with the inner of the LNB F connector or it can bend over and short out.

ie Effectively no LNB connected, so it'll squawk but you'll never get a proper signal.

Have another play once you've sorted out the cable stub.

On 1W, most of us start alignment with TP 11862 H 28000 7/8 selected - it is strong and carries the easily recognisable Sky News International and BBC World News.

Your receiver may need this TP adding/editing as pre-stored TPs are almost always way out of date.

if it's the kind of satellite meter I'm thinking of you adjust the dish until you get a reading, you then turn the control so it goes back to around 5 and then again move the dish to get the signal to peak, you keep doing this until you have the strongest signal, this requires gentel movements, both East/West and Up/Down.
 
Try looking elsewhere for a satellite (such as Hotbird or Astra 1). Once you have successfully found one - a scan will confirm you have the right satellite - then mark down the elevation required for that particular position. Also get the meter adjustment in roughly the right position for a mid range level on the needle.

Intelsat 1002 should then be easier to find by swinging round to the rough location and using the difference in satellite angles at your particular location.
