Decided it was time to back up my laptop to my network instead of using Flashdrives and installed Macrium
reflect free. Left it running overnight and came back to message not enough disk space. Went up to the server and discovered indeed no disk space, where has it all gone?

Eventually discovered that I recently tried my XP home server with Norton Internet Security for a month but did not like it and even after fully uninstalling I had not realised until last night that I was left with a 340Gb backup directory in the root of the C drive. I tried all I could think of to remove those files and after reading various bits on different websites I tried a number of methods contained therein including altering permissions etc and finally decided to boot to safe mode and start experimenting on my own how to get rid of these pesky files and directories.
Some four hours later I have succeeded and recovered the 340Gb of disk space but even more now think that Norton are doing this deliberately to persuade punters to stick with them.

For future reference and for any one else I list the steps below:

When booting press F8 to go to Safe Mode

Navigate to the root of C drive assuming that is your O/S drive
Using windows Explorer find the directory in the root of C drive called
N360_BACKUP
Contained within that directory will be sub directories called {xxxx
with whole permutations of numbers and letters, double click on that directory
and you will see sub directories {0, {1, {2 etc
Right click on one select properties, ensure files are read only by making grey tick black
click on security tab and tick top option full control, click apply
then on window that pops up apply changes to this folder, sub folder and files
click ignore all
Highlight all files in directory to be deleted by clicking on the top one in the list,
then scroll to the bottom of the list and press and hold shift key, and left click bottom file and all should select in blue
Then right click and select delete, are you sure? yes click the 'all' option
Then right click and delete the folder you just emptied

Similar routine is required for all folders including higher up ones until the N360_BACKUP folder is finally removed

This is tedious but at least gets rid of the files and folders, no doubt someone with more programming skills than I could write a routine to automate the operation.

Better yet, just git rid of anything to do with Norton, most useless bunch of programs ever developed.

What we say on this side of the pond, "Run your PC Norton's way, not the way it's supposed to".

FWIW, I think that this is a Windows, rather than Norton/Symantec, issue as I often have the same issue on folders on my m/c's - unfortunately you have to "start at the bottom" and delete the contents of each lowest-level folder before you then do the same for the next level up, and so on thereafter under you can finally delete the top level folder!

BTW: after a very "painful" problem with a much earlier version of Norton Security in the early 90's I have totally avoided any Norton/Symantec a/v s/w in any form since then.

Or you call Symantec support and aks for "Cleanwipe", which is the Symatec software for deleting the program completely including the registry entries that ill still remain in your system i you just delete the folders and files.

You should check your event viewer for errors. The files cannot be deleted, because the Norton/Symantec live update and other services are still running on the machine. Use your command prompt and type sc query. You willget a list of all i´nstalled services. I suppose you will still find some derelict Norton or Symantec entries which are now causing erors because the necessary files and directories are gone.

CleanWipe is the best way to get id of Norton.

BTW: All suppliers of AV software have a similar software available due to the natue of AV software which integrates deeply into the system.

I repeat..................... the program was uninstalled correctly yet despite that, the root directory where the backups were stored remains, this is not a Windows problem it is a Norton problem, the program was uninstalled months ago in accordance with the instructions for uninstalling hence there could not be a possibility of the program running on the PC two months later.

@Topper: There is no such thing as properly uninstalling windows software, there are always leftovers. And yes, it is a Norton Problem. Norton whatever is a product of Symantec. Cleanwipe is also a Symantec Product. It removes all Symantec software.

If you were unable to delete the directories, it is because some other software is still accessing them.

Try to open regedit32 via the run dialog and the search for "Norton" without changing or deleting anythong.

Good advice.

I use Revo Uninstaller for the removal of recalcitrant progs ... it scans very deep for leftovers, highlights them and let's you choose to delete.

Sadly it only works if the main part of the rogue prog. is installed.

I've got round this for some issues when a Windows Remove has only partially worked by reinstalling first!

This is the official removal tool on Majorgeeks.com, no name but it seems to do the job and is regularly updated.

But I do not need a tool to remove the software it is and has been already gone if you read the first post it was two months ago. No other software was accessing the backup files, it was the permissions on the files and directories that stopped it being removed when uninstalling, hence in order to remove subsequently they had to be changed at directory level and could flow down to sub-folders and files. Indeed had I taken the time and searched a lot further on the web before starting I could have unlocked those permissions before starting the process of uninstalling but I did not, hence the files remained locked. The remnants left in the registry files were removed using CCleaner, so there is not anything further to do however thanks for everyone imparting their knowledge on to the thread

My reply was to Mickwig, it looks like there are a few 'official' Norton removal tools from them, they may achieve different things. Terryl's statement does reflect some past experience I had with a subscription that commenced a campaign of terror on the pc two months before the renewal date.

Yes well that campaign of terror was what I remembered last time I installed it in 2005 and I only really installed the one month trial recently to see if in the intervening decade they had got rid of their bloatware products.
