Decided it was time to back up my laptop to my network instead of using Flashdrives and installed Macrium
reflect free. Left it running overnight and came back to message not enough disk space. Went up to the server and discovered indeed no disk space, where has it all gone?
Eventually discovered that I recently tried my XP home server with Norton Internet Security for a month but did not like it and even after fully uninstalling I had not realised until last night that I was left with a 340Gb backup directory in the root of the C drive. I tried all I could think of to remove those files and after reading various bits on different websites I tried a number of methods contained therein including altering permissions etc and finally decided to boot to safe mode and start experimenting on my own how to get rid of these pesky files and directories.
Some four hours later I have succeeded and recovered the 340Gb of disk space but even more now think that Norton are doing this deliberately to persuade punters to stick with them.
For future reference and for any one else I list the steps below:
When booting press F8 to go to Safe Mode
Navigate to the root of C drive assuming that is your O/S drive
Using windows Explorer find the directory in the root of C drive called
N360_BACKUP
Contained within that directory will be sub directories called {xxxx
with whole permutations of numbers and letters, double click on that directory
and you will see sub directories {0, {1, {2 etc
Right click on one select properties, ensure files are read only by making grey tick black
click on security tab and tick top option full control, click apply
then on window that pops up apply changes to this folder, sub folder and files
click ignore all
Highlight all files in directory to be deleted by clicking on the top one in the list,
then scroll to the bottom of the list and press and hold shift key, and left click bottom file and all should select in blue
Then right click and select delete, are you sure? yes click the 'all' option
Then right click and delete the folder you just emptied
Similar routine is required for all folders including higher up ones until the N360_BACKUP folder is finally removed
This is tedious but at least gets rid of the files and folders, no doubt someone with more programming skills than I could write a routine to automate the operation.
