On the scrounge again..

On most DVD/CD drives it is a very small switch located in the front lower right of main housing it's self, the front panel button pushes on this switch, or in some cases the button can be remotely located elsewhere.

As too the emergency eject it is located in the left side, if you look at the attached photo you can see a small whitish gray area, that is the emergency eject lever.

If your front panel is removed then you should see this lever.
 
And checking on shipping costs to the UK from here would be around $70 USD, way too much.

Not on the Benq drives fitted to XBox 360's - on those there is an access hole to allow inserting a paperclip to turn the gears that eject the drawer.

If you take the front panel off that drive you will see this lever, it's what the paper clip hits .
This lever is directly attached to the gears that open the drive.

Yep saw that one earlier today ..
pointless persuing it ..
As to pin hole eject levers ..
This one does not have one ...but then it never had a front fascia either ..so ...go figure..
I'm hoping CH can find something suitable ..but will likely require the front fascia and eject button be removed to make it physically compatible.

In my photo the DVD player has the front bezel and panel removed, easy to do they just snap in.
So if you could take a photo like the one I did we may discover where the emergency eject is.
 
Well, Im in the right part of the storage and can see lots of DVD RW drives Sony/Lite-On/Sansung etc,
This one shows BENQ but is the cd rewriter version (though the laser might be the same)

Ill keep looking after my trip today as I know there are others from the same manufacturer.

I do hope you turn up something suitable.
Afaik ...CD and DVD use different wavelengths of light ..and very often you can encounter a situation where a player can read a cd ..but fails to even recognise a DVD disc ..
From this I can only conclude there may in fact be more than one diode lazing at the focus .
So I doubt it is the same optical unit..

Take for example CD which produces visible red light (not that you would ever look at it directly)
..whereas Bluray by definition uses a blue lazer light ..

Bluray aside, I thought the difference was within the lasers used in read only and read/write kit, but I could be wrong.

On the Xbox 360 the drive does not have a separate fascia - it only is covered by the Xbox fasvia. On the frive I recovered a disc from there is definitely not a lever as you describe the paper clip pushes directly on the gears - see this page item 5 near the bottom - http://support.xbox.com/en-GB/xbox-360/console/manually-eject-disc

Makes sense buddy ..but I can only speak from my experiences repairing domestic Disc recorders ..
..and as I said ..
I have seen situations where a DVD is simply not recognised (Disc not present error ..no disc inserted etc) ...and yet it will still recognise and play a CD just fine ..
So who has a definitive answer ?

Failure to recognise (on a DVD drive) is normally down to a focussing issue, since CDs have more meat on the bones (about double that of a DVD disc), the laser gubbings is effectively longsighted through old age.

Again ..you could well be correct mate ...
So ..still looking for that definate answer ?
Perhaps the CD RW optical pickup simply cannot focus for DVD ...but I would suggest this is something than cant be modified by someone like me ..thus they are not interchangeable.
I once tried putting a DVD in a PC CD drive ..and it was not recognised as a disc ..thus it couldn't be read .
So ..there are differences ..be they physical or software control of the focus ..
who knows..???

Which might offer clues ..

CDs use an infrared laser invisible
DVDs use a red laser ~600nm visible
Blu-ray uses a violet/blue laser ~405nm visible
 
Since the requirement is to 'read' through twice as much plastic, the CD drive has no software to bring the laser into focus on the closer optical material in a DVD. Again from memory I don't think that has anything to do with the laser design or mechanics.

Old CD read only drives were infrared certainly, not sure about the later - r/w - ones.

..but with a writer ...the requirement is both read and to write..
And therein lies the problem..
Not enough info available ...and constant changes being applied all the time to the physical formats..
Tis both interesting /fascinating ...and frustrating..

When you think about it ..
even if you used a red laser for both CD and DVD ..you would have to have greater control over focus (firmware of the servo system) ..to pinpoint and read DVD data as it more compact on the disc surface ...plus there may well be a need for greater spin speed of that disc ...
In theory an ageing disc motor or faulty servo system could prevent a DVD read ..but still allow CD read..

The writing system not only requires the ability to focus , but to heat up the embedded layer. There were two temperatures, one for burning (higher ) and one for erasing (lower) which I think are the same on both CD and DVD
