Been hearing about this new openbox s16 receiver on the North American boards, as of yet untested and no support:

The OPENBOX S16, the real 1080P HD video decoder, what is the first one using the ALI3606 chip receiver._http://www.scobuy.com/images/l/201203/b/13331864290.jpg
The OPENBOX S16 hd pvr is real 1080P HD video decoder s16. Now it is coming with the ALI M3606C program (which is an upgraded version of ALI3602) and accepting large purchase, the ALI M3606C program, to bid farewell to brush the crash.

The following advantages:
1. The real 1080P-50, 1080P-60 high-definition decoding and GX, color fuller, clearer images;
2. Support U disk, hard disk media player (in addition to the format to RMVB format can all be supported), as a player to use, also can be watching TV while recording;
3. Full Dolby (Dolby) function;
4. self-developed software, without encryption chip, completely genuine;
5. It can perfect instead of the OPENBOX/SKYBOX S9, _http://www.scobuy.com/free-shipping-openbox-hd-s10-p-11803.html openbox S10 and openbox S11, openbox S12 hd and so on (ALI3602).

Openbox S16 Compare with OPENBOX/SKYBOX-S9, S10, S11,S12
OPENBOX-S9、S10、S11、S12 use ALI3602
1. Only support 1080i, 720P HD decoding, and the image quality is poor;
2. Supports only a small part of the U-disk media player format;
3. Only half the Dolby function;
4. With the encryption clip, easy to brush crash._http://www.scobuy.com/images/l/201203/b/13331873850.jpg

any mention of an openbox has my interest ..though you can't really get that much info from the spec..
They can keep all the bells and whistles ..

I just want the highest gain tuner possible ...4:2:2 decoding on chip...large channel storage ...sat position storage around 100...diseqc1.2 positioner..usals diseqc1.3 positioning ..stackable multi switching various combos ..includingdiseqc switch> motor control 1.2 and or 1.3.....jpeg on screen picture snapshot to usb stick ..exterior hd storage ...manual input control of sr fec plus PIDS as well as hardware blindscan with user step control...
HD SD Mpeg 2 Mpeg4 qpsk 8psk 16 and 32 psk ....extreme LSR to go below 1000...etc etc etc
Don't want much do I :)
In other words ...the perfect DXers box with maximum switch and motor combo control.
One day ....one day ....one day
If they build it ....I will come .......
(and I ain't talkin baseball and ghosts)
....with cash in hand.

I hear ya VS. If I could get blind scan speed of a skybox s12, tuner sensitivity of an optibox anaconda and 4:2:2 feeds on azbox all on one receiver I'd be first in line. I'm not using switches on my setups and I use stand alone positioners.

Thats the problem Costac....you need roughly 3 to 4 boxes to cover all the options...
I very much like my tbs6925 pcie card ...as this covers many of the options I outlined ..
Problem is you need to run a pc to use it ....and thats not always ideal.
An all in one box would be my dream ...and I wouldn't mind paying for it ...but sadly it doesn't exist...except in my head.
I need those combo switch arrangements as I run my big dish for Cband with a vbox ...so diseqc 1.2 ....plus 2 smaller dishes for ku ...both usals diseqc 1.3 ....and thus I need complex switching ..and the ability to drive these various diseqc motor options via an uncommited switch.

Another thing I'd like to add to my wish list is the ability to decode Digicipher....fta stuff ..
Not used in the uk and europe ...so limited appeal of course ....but being a dxer ..I'd love to be able to resolve the limited DGC2 stuff which is fta on the western sats in Cband....
Not much of it I know ...but its there ..so I want it...
;)
Greedy huh ? I considered importing a Skywalker card for the PC from the US ...but its not just the expensive card itself ...but also shipping costs...
..for the handful of channels I could get fta ...I can't justify these costs.

The openbox S16 finally showed up last week, still testing it out but I must say it has been a bit disappointing though:

Looks like your recommendation for the Skybox F3 was wise - several of us bought one and have not been disappointed.

Which makes it a shame that a similar product from a similar stable does not cut the mustard: Care to give more details?

Listing some of its disadvantages may take several posts. For starters their isn't a manual, North American adapter nor hdmi cable enclosed. The receiver boots in pal which is great for you guys but not us ntsc guys. No batteries are included for the remote. On the remote itself there isn't a sat button to bring up the list of scanned sats in, you have to press the ok button and scroll through them. Most of these above issues are minor and I must say that the picture quality is outstanding. The one thing that has turned me off the most is that there isn't any audio or video information when you press the info button. My main use of a receiver is for scanning in feeds and new channels and that info is imperative for me. The funny thing is that all other openbox and skybox models have had that info automatically from the get go. Finally, one last downfall I have found is that its auto scan is a bit slower then the f3.

A lot of these openbox badged receivers are geared up for Europe and of viewing cs channels etc so won't include or miss many of the features a more expensive receiver will have to knock out a cheap box used as a client.

I'm not impressed by them myself.

costactc, what's your main receiver ?

Do you have a Linux receiver dm or vu+ ?

I have many receivers that I'm not even using. On my c band dish I'm using Linux azbox ultra and my skybox f3 for fast blind scan and on my ku band dish I'm using Linux optibox anaconda and openbox s12 for blind scan. My main use for a receiver is to scan in channels and feeds as I have never gotten into the more technical side of what I can actually do with a receiver with the exception of accessing You Tube for videos.

I just get the OPENBOX S16 today. Here are some differences with your description:

- 1x CI slot (card reader) Irdeto & CryptoWork
- No CA slot (no CAM slot) !
- No SCART connectors (not a problem)
- GPRS connector, 2x USB2, etc...
- US power plug
- Pressing 2 times the info button give audio and video informations

I agree that no button on the remote for satellites list is not fine.

The problem is that the card reader work only with Irdeto and CryptoWork, we cannot plug a CAM, and there is not softcam solution to do the card reader working with SECA, VIACESS, or others systems.
CCcam servers are working with european channels, not for Caribbean area.

Any idea ?

Not the same but similar... I got to use an "Openbox x5" recently and I feel I should warn anyone before they part with any cash.
The Openbox x5 is much much worse than any other Skyboxes/Openboxes I have used.
The software is very buggy and packed with spelling mistakes. When you press a button on the remote it takes 3-7seconds to respond. There are no proper channel lists for this box and you can't use the same firmware/channel lists as the Skybox f3.

Those are some of the reasons why I put my X5 into my receiver grave yard and also the fact that it misses tp and gives the wrong video information.

tbqh I'm not particularly impressed with any of these [openbox/skybox] receivers. They do have their uses though...

With the exception of the s9 and f3 stb, I would stay away from these receivers. I've been testing the new X2 Premium(2) with excellent results. The x2 has the fastest blind scan I have ever tested and its tuner is extremely sensitive.
