46 years after the Edinburgh - Carlisle Waverley Line was closed & lifted the Edinburgh - Galashiels section of the line reopens tomorrow. A full timetable was being run today so I had a drive around and watched a few trains go by on this incredibly special weekend for this area.

Most of you wont know how isolated the Borders is - we are 35 miles south of Edinburgh & the railway will give a journey time of under an hour - which compares most favourably to X95 express bus service - which takes almost 2 hour trip on a rattly old charabanc which stops at ever tiddly little village on the outskirts of Edinburgh and can be excruciatingly uncomfortable after even 20 minutes!

That's brilliant for that area, I HATE buses, and who wouldn't prefer a 50min train ride to a 2 hour bus ride.

Don´t know what your moaning about, on the way you have fresh meat, a church and an electrical shop to buy all your needs!

I got a DVD around here all about the Waverley line. But it's all about the steam trains that used to run before Dr Beaching put his axe in.

Its taken £350million to undo Mr Beeching's work! And there is still a 60 mile gap to Carlisle.


(Did you know the rail line serving Mr Beechings home town survived despite being a duplicate line?? Strange that isnt it?!)

Steam specials start on Thursday - 60009 Union of South Africa will be doing the honours :D Three days a week until mid October
 
Not long after I move to Galashiels my brother asked where the nearest rail stations were. So I replied "Berwick upon Tweed, Edinburgh & Carlisle" - all over 30 miles away (Carlisle is 60) His reply was "what sort of godforsaken place have you moved to?!"

He lives in Wolverhampton.....

Ive hated the run back from Edinburgh on the buses from the first time I went to the beer festival and had to get the bus back! :-lmao

Don´t blame you, unless it was a deluxe bus, or had the funnel and hosepipe at the front, rugby club style!
 
Most of the lines around here that was shut in the beaching report became Preserved lines. Like the bluebell line.
 
The question has to be:- Have the delays returned with the trains? :rolleyes:
