My Satellite Setup
Oyster caro ci s8
My Location

Hi just looking for advice
I have bought a motorhome with an oyster caro ci s8 self seeking motor dish setup
The receiver can no longer be updated as of 2022
It's an SD only receiver and can no longer lock on to astra 28.2
I have been told I need to buy a new oyster receiver to solve the issue as it is HD
My question is could I connect a HD to SD converter in the coaxial from dish to receiver box to solve the issue and lock back on to astra 28.2
The motor dish setup is unique to oyster so can't use any other receiver to control the dish

Unfortunately the answer is no. If you can control the dish manually from your existing receiver you could connect a generic HD receiver to the satellite loop out from your current receiver but it will take a lot of faffing to align the dish every time.

That's what I thought
The setup does include an avtex w164dr LCD with a sattalite turner built in which is HD.
It's appears to only connected to the SD receiver by Av cable
So could I connect the coaxial input on the TV to the coaxial out put on the SD receiver and that work

Keep the existing satellite system separate and bolt a second dish aligned to Astra 2 on the wall, feeding directly into the television tuner.

But that's not possible to do
As it's a motorhome and the dish on the roof is a square retractable system

Yes the Sat Out on the receiver to the Sat In on the TV, usually with a coaxial cable with F connectors at both ends. This will only work if you can move the dish manually. The television should then have control of the LNB (not movement of the dish), however it may also only be able to receive the same horizontal/vertical + high/low combination as the Oyster receiver. If that is the case you could try connecting the LNB cable (currently connected to Sat In on the Oyster) directly to the TV but again than won't enable it to control movement of the dish.

You can set up a Freesat/Zone 1 dish on a pole, aligned with a simple meter each time you park up.

There are even smaller dishes out there with a complete alignment kit for around £30 but they may not be suitable where you may travel to.

And that really defeats the point of having a self seeking dish.

I'd realy like to own a car that I can put the longer ladders onto, but I drive a van some days to offset the failings of the first.

Could I split the coaxial cable where it goes to the receiver and run directly to the avtex TV
The receiver needs a feed from the dish to get it's position.
It still finds astra 1 and other sattalites just not astra 28.2 with all the UK channels on

Having a fixed dish is not a practical solution for a motor caravan, which is why it is fitted with an Oyster.

First I would try connecting the TV's satellite input to the Oyster's Sat Out. The problem that may occur is the television might send voltage at all times even when the satellite input is not selected for viewing - this could prevent the Oyster being able to tune the transponder it is looking for when aligning the dish though without any experience of this system I can't say for definite. It might also work fine.

Do you have a manual you can upload or link to?

No that's the weird thing
It will find astra 1 as that's where it gets it's updates from
And that's it
I did an updated channel list and only used the UK channels and now it won't display any channels other than what it finds on astra 1
I have to manually move the dish to astra 28.2 but it won't display any channels or frequency even though I have put in the latest transponder frequency
Think I might have to re install the original update from 2022 with all the sattalites and channels and start again

Not when driving of course, but a suitcase dish will be fine when parked up.

I'm surprised the original kit consists of an HD TV (with inbuilt satellite tuner) but the associated receiver/positioner is not and connects via the AV input.

Maybe the transponder that it searches for to confirm 28.2 east is now closed or changed parameters.

On page 41 it mentions the second receiver, in this case the TV, should be switched off when the dish is auto-aligning. Switching to another input on the television, for example the video output of the Oyster receiver, might disable the satellite tuner in the TV allowing the Oyster to align the dish (for those it can automatically lock onto). If not then a manual switch could be used to decide which receiver is connected to the LNB.

Would that make a difference if TV is turned off when auto seek is enabled
The TV at the moment is only connected to receiver by AV

When the TV is turned off it should cut power to the LNB (from the TV) allowing the Oyster to auto seek.
