But this is one time I wish I didn't live so far away ..and could participate in it's construction..
Me too, the drum is still in the boot of the car as I can't lift it out on my own.
drum+bits.jpg

The cost of shipping was not much different to the cost of fuel to collect so I had it sent to a nearby business which has a fork lift & storage. It took two trips to bring the bits home although I probably could have done it in one if I had packed the car better. Pics include one in the crate, from the Ebay listing and the petals on the passenger seat..
s-l1600.jpg petals_in_car.jpg petals_etc_2.jpg

This one shows, top to bottom: Radial ribs (16) & central plate, rib to drum brackets (16) & feed support to outer ring brackets (4), petals (16), outer ring parts (16) The feed support arms are only shown in the crate picture.
petals_etc.jpg

Unfortunately the fixings, of which there must be thousands, are not stainless steel. Hmmm.

Do any of the other buyers want to join in here?

Looking good, nice to look at even if you don't install it G. :)
The PP thing ..... the fact that my 1.8 installation is able to crank down to virtually ground level put it in the Portable / Not Fixed category and helped me get it passed the Council Gods.
If i went for anything bigger i would seriously look at something like a very low profile bogie assembly that could be pushed into position from out of my garage a few feet and secured in place when in use .... food for thought ;)

John, BM, I was thinking of something discrete and easy to manoeuvre like this: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/172333070718 One reason for the trailer option is that I don't have a single location that is clear of trees all around and secure. I had the 3m on a ground stand for ~12 years so there is precedent. The other dishes are pre-mid-1980s restrictions.
BM, mount - I'd prefer an az-el to cover non-geo, timescale - I've learned not to promise what I can't deliver

I may not bid on that, I don't think that the Fiat Panda has the correct towing hitch. There's also a small matter of it taking up most of the garden.

Thanks for the info S-band sounds interesting, I will be making something in the near future for bigger dish I was thinking on the same lines as John, info I got from a wheel supplier, this company stock all types of wheels some with levelling system.

Hi Gareth,

Based on 2000Kg over 4 castors moving over normal floor conditions we would recommend that the dynamic load capacity for each castor is 1/3rd of the total load – so in this case 667Kg would be sufficient- In order to make the load as easy to move as possible, I would say go for a 200mm wheel minimum and also precision ball axle bearings – so quote as follows:

Swivel Castor: 200GDH4NYBJ @ £23.36 ea/net

Braked Castor: 200GDH4NYBJSWB @ £26.68 ea/net

Both are available from stock.

Lovely dish :)
The manual says that it can be assembled by 2 people using ladders. The drum is mounted on the ground stand so that the dish, when built, is on its back. The rest of the dish is then assembled on the drum. Sounds quite easy, as long as you have something to mount it on!

The data sheet specifies the weight as 612lbs which is about 278kg. That must be the shipping weight. The total weight of the bits I have is 214kg. Here's a list of the weights of the individual parts:

It's just the dish. All the mounts etc are very expensive (professional prices) from the new manufacturers, Challenger: Mounts Archives - Challenger

I have the same (or similar ) drum for the 3.1 Patriot I installed many, many moons ago.

I welded it to some angle iron at the correct declination and onto an Ajak H-to H motor. It's still in the garden as I cant be bothered to move it around to the front of the house.

Yours if needed.

Wondering if you would pull in the beIN package @25.5e with this magnificent dish, still not seen any confirmed reports in the UK of successful reception of the package on es'hailsat

BM, Journey, I've not had a good large dish before. The Winegard 3m was fine for C band but only a couple of dB better than the 1.5m on ku. That may have been more due to the LNB and co-rotor 2 though. It was a very deep dish and probably not illuminated fully on ku.

Many thanks for the kind offer. I found a couple of references to it:
Disaster!!
What systems you got then.
Have you any pics of the whole thing on the drum?
I finally got the 3.8 drum out of the car. It is about 750mm diameter.

drum.jpg

I got this because it was there (and Ebay failed st1 et al) so now I have some problems. I would prefer to have full az-el with PC control to allow non-geo tracking and maybe moonbounce. BM's favourite, Prositel, looks good but too much for me. Amongst the SPID pictures on RF Ham Design's site is this one http://www.rfhamdesign.com/images/big245417a38b1270a135.jpg however, it does not look as heavy as my 3.8. I like the balanced approach shown in this data sheet from RFHamDesign although I'd rather it were made from something a bit heavier and rustproof. The balancing weight etc may push the vertical weight over 300kg which is getting more awkward. It will also be much easier to build the 3.8 bird bath style as per manual if it is on an az-el. Being able to park it in the bird bath position will also minimise wind loading.

I've also got the problem of a position for it. The location of the old Winegard it not bad but limited to +/-50 degrees due to trees. Even then, there will be some excess ground noise from those trees at lower elevations. Whilst the trailer idea is tempting, I will have trouble getting it from a safe storage location to the clear sky location. I don't have John's set-up where it could live in a garage and come out Thunderbirds style. More thought required. In the meantime I need to finish the CM1.8
