Grrr! Just got back from a week away to find house freezing and freezer not. Something tripped the RCD but everything has switched back on OK apart from my HTPC. Checked with neighbours that there has been no supply outage. When I tried to switch it on the PC spun the fan before dying....tried that a couple of times then took power off the HDD and then it stayed on. Reconnected HDD and it powered up but made fan noise from PS, so deffo going to replace it, but is that likely to have tripped the RCD?

Oh, and there's 50 quid's worth in the freezer and insurance has £100 excess!!!! Did I say Grrr?

RCDs trip when a live wire comes into contact with an earth one. So, it could well be the PSU in your PC but who knows...

Amazed you left the power supply switched on. I switch of everything except the fridge, freezer and the cctv system. I tell the girls (both past 50) to bad if their Tivo box is recording a series. Even turn off the water at the mains.

Never had a PC supply trip anything myself, have had them snap, crackle & pop, belch out plumes of smoke, explode and catch fire, but never trip anything... :-rofl2

I disconnect the car battery when parked at the airport

I had a faulty PSU trip my power supply, along with a couple of kettles, which I only use for washing up !!!
What I don't understand is how this one tripped your electric safety, when you weren't home, as it usually happens when you turn on the PC, not when it's turned off.

When I was somewhat younger in the days of dodgy analogue satellite kit by a rather well known company oop north, an employees incontinent cat was electrocuted whilst he was asleep on the receiver, presumably because it was warm. The owner returned in the evening to a blown fuse in the consumer box, a bit of a stink in the living room, and a frazzled ball of fur. Nothing else in his AV cabinet worked after replacing the fuse.
