Peas Hill, an historic thoroughfare in the centre of Cambridge, has been nailed by the police as one of the ten most crime-ridden areas in the country.

Can't check exactly what crimes were committed during the month in question (December 2010, 127 offences), as the Police UK website detailing the offences is down at present.

From my frequent visits to Peas Hill, it always strikes me as fairly innocuous; not much happens there. There's the the back of the Guildhall, a rather refined teashop, a theatre and a couple of banks.
Ah, banks - any robberies lately? Not that I'm aware of. Must be druggies and drunks. Will be interesting to find out the details when I can.

Incidentally, the street is only a couple of hundred yards long, so it may be the worst crime area in the country per yard

BTW, probably no peas were sold there - the name probably dates from a few hundred years ago when there were fishmongers stalls (Latin fish - piscis)

Strangely enough, following a link on the BBC website I found the self same Police UK source. I searched using my mum's postcode and found listed the crimes she had reported last month (two rubbish bins stolen!!). When I lived in St.Mary Cray, Kent, the local beat bobby (this was eleven years ago) positively encouraged us to report crimes, so that his senior officers could push for increased funding. Maybe Peas Hill is an area where every crime is actively reported and/or covered by a plethora of well maintained CCTV cameras overseen by an enthusiastic control room.

Who needs common sense when you have statistics?

ANother statistical screw up - a similar thing has happened in Preston where a small culdesac has been fingered as one of the top 10 crime locations.

That would be Preston in Lancashire, it is the top of the list of hot crime spots in the UK however, according to the Chief Constable there were only 3 crimes on that street recorded in December but 127 in the whole of Preston City Centre and for some reason all 127 crimes have been allocated to that street. Bloody computer programmers not doing enough code testing before launching as usual

Most likely. Just heard a Police spokesman (got the short straw I suppose) say that Peas Hill might include Cambridge Market. A trap for unwary tourists.

'Nuff said.
