Well, in 2010 I chipped into a thread on broken Fiat springs to give my two penn'eth on a broken Pug spring

Well 8 years later, exactly the same thing has happened on another 406. Reversed off the drive and 'crunch'....front NS collapsed. Took the wheel off to see if I could do anything to see that the bottom coil had snapped off allowing the rest of the spring to drop right down and rest on the drive shaft.

So, put wheel back on and called RAC. Guy turned up within the hour and jacked up the car and put some spacer collars around the operating rod of the strut which stopped the car from sitting as low and so allowed it to be moved. Took it to the mender that I wanted about 5 miles away. In the meantime I'd called him to say on the way. He ordered a new spring and it was being delivered as we arrived with the car - very impressive for a Friday pm, I thought.

It's spooky that both times this has happened reversing off the drive.

The scary bit is I was due to drive 70ml each way the Heathrow the following morning to collect grandson.
 
Wasn't your time then was it!, glad you got sorted so efficiently, suspect I would not have one myself if the springs fail as easy as that
 
This is a known issue, and Peugeot were replacing stuff F.O.C

I've had 2 pug 406s and both have been fine :D

The last one a 1996 1.8 LX finally got scrapped when the Gearbox went on it with 196000 on the clock, the original engine still didn't burn oil and the bodywork was in faily good condition and the one i have now a 1996 2.0 GLX with 136000 on the clock.

No issues with either cars with regards to the front springs. I only use it to go to work in and upto now neither car let me down apart from when i blew the diff out of the 1.8LX :-lmao
 
A spring on my 406 also snapped while parked in the drive way a few years ago - it seems they don't snap when at speed, which is nice!

Gearboxes are fairly tough on these. My first 2.1TD 406 I've had for 5 years and sold it at 145000 miles with no issues. My current HDI 110 I've had for 3 years with 125000 miles on it and just passed its MOT with no advisories. Tough cars - unlike some of Jap-crap I've owned in the past 'O'-red
 
My brother (the one that isn't a waste of space) has a Peugeot estate and he's been having endless problems with it, transmission, injectors, electrics, suspension, the only thing that hasn't been a manufacturing fault was when someone ran into the offside rear quarter (minor damage which was repaired, after a battle with his insurance co.!!), and my dad had a peugeot too which blew a hole in it's transmission, both fairly recent models, which really doesn't put much confidence into the brand... :eek:

So, yeah, it may be prudent to go with another brand, like, Honda, or maybe Citroen perhaps...... O-Ha
 
The only problems I have had with the ZX in the last year has been the injection pump (possibly my fault), and last week I replaced two glow plugs for the princely sum of £15. I can of course deal with slow punctures, a rather odd steering issue (dragging badly - very similar to the BX, which was most likely down to sludge in the pipes) and a broken tailgate ram (now propped open with a CM1.2 feed strut when I need it).

Apart from that I can live with it being slower than a dead dog.

Better to be slower than a dead dog than flying off the road into someone's living room at 80mph in a three letter german brand.... :-rofl2
 
You don't know just how slow a tired ZX 1.9 diesel auto is then.

Oh I know, my BX 1.9TD that I had for a short few months went at a full 0mph the whole time I had it...O-Ha

That said, any Automatic car is going to be slower than it's Manual counterpart, lots of energy is lost in transmission due to the transmission fluids sloshing about to engage gears and clutches, as opposed to the non-sloshy movements of a pedal and a lever... O-Ha
 
We broke no end of springs on out sadly departed T-plate Fiesta.

Rather alarmed at one point to find out that Id been driving it for goodness knows how long with the jagged edge of a shattered spring perched about an inch above the drivers side front tyre!
