1st idea go get some AV software, there are plenty of threads with links in this part of the forum.
2nd idea (perhaps this should be 1st) go to one of the recommended web sites symantec.com etc and do a free system scan or do a google search for Free AV scan.
3rd idea write out 100 times, why was I foolish enough to think I could get away with no antivirus software?O-no ;)

Let us know, (if your pc survives long enough), how you did

Are there any good photos?

1. Get yourself a FREE firewall an install it immediately. Sygate Personal Firewall is just one of many.

2. Get yourself a FREE online virus scan. Panda online virus scan is just one.

3. Stop visiting those mature content sites.

4. Some people have been known to download an Anti Virus program (say, Norton) via their favourite .torrent client. I have no idea how that works though :toke:

PS Topper beat me to it, *wink* (now I'll read what he said, LOL)

But your post is more informative, better laid out with good links BM, I assumed he had a firewall as I cannot believe he is using Win98 in this day and age as most software will not run on it now

Start up in safe mode to download the antivirus and do a scan, otherwise it may not work.

Good point (as always).

If you are running XP - click START - then locate RUN in the admin panel - in the RUN entry field type MSCONFIG (lower case) - on the toolbar, find and select BOOT.INI - under boot options, check the SAFEBOOT radio button - click APPLY - and then restart :-doh2

When you have finished faffing around - to revert back to normal boot, go into msconfig but this time select the GENERAL tab and check NORMAL STARTUP.

I do agree to the What, No Virus Shield chat :) This is not normal today The net is so loaded with crap so U have no chance to stay alive without protection

but

If U know the name of that proggy that is bugging U then U can find it in the registry, and delete it

and, there is always the chance of a rollback, if U know when U was hit

(before U try the registry stunt, make sure U have a good backup copy, just in case)

Try the restore first

I wouldn't recommend going into the registry unless you have some idea of, well, computers.

Going back to what Alex first said - and that he can't call up the task manager - that does sound very odd.

Alex could, carefully, try this (again assuming he has XP *cough* PRO)

See Tutorial

I think that he is using his own PC now, that was a while ago, but he hasn't changed his profile. :)

Well that article I link to does speak of Group Policy. The Task Manager can be enabled and disabled in gpedit - with Admin rights.

Suggesting the our mate alex might still be down the internet cafe trying to hack his way round someone elses PC, hehe.

Wasn't he trying something similar some months ago??:-rofl2

Alex - we need more info. Are you on an internet cafe machine trying to hack the system, or are you on your own machine.

If its your own computer what O/S are you running?

I think so (not that I really know of course). Saying that my browser cookies usually rate higher as a risk.

The fotos.exe 'virus' is over five years old. I reckon this is all a ruse!

Now (conspiracy theory) I reckon alex just wants to find a way of hacking into into an admin blocked task manager - so he can, well, shut off the protection and then continue to do all that torrent downloading he wanted to do down the library some months ago:toke:

We'll find out tomorrow, what he's up to, when the public office opens again ;-))

I have to admit that such a handsome fella is pushing his luck ignoring basic internet protocol and is pushing his luck at firstly not checking in here for 9 hours and secondly being naive enough to think that he is invincible or at least his computer is.

Jesus! :-Nooo Topper has pictures of Alex on his computer. Alarm bells.

LOL, where are the SatsUK lawyers so we can nip this in the bud.

Oi !

For those with a laptop with 2GB memory and RS232 port (remember those children ?), Win98 still cuts the mustard for upgrading various cards and CAMs.
Anything more recent will fill the hard disc with its minimum OS requirements
