Hi all

Ive been trying to get my head round all the info that is out there, I have ordered a Compro Videomate s350 card as I wanted to get up and running as soon as possible but from reading round here I should probably spend a few more quid and get a better card?

Also, I have an on satellite box from Sky sitting in the garage, I don't think it has a card with it would I need to get a Freesat card from Sky or is there another way of pairing it with a different card and extending the amount of watchable channels such as the Astra channels?
 
Cant help with the pc card.

The Sky box is useless for any anything apart from the Sky UK channels. It'll work for the free channels fine.
 
Hi all

I did make a post earlier but admittedly and from looking around I was perhaps a bit vague.

I have an old sattelite on the side of the house, I had forgotton about this until I come across the coax behind the TV the other day. I also acquired a sky box off a friend.

To be honest I am looking to start up as cheap as possible, I have ordered a TV Card (perhaps, I should have spent a bit more but I posted that in the other thread, so Ill steer off that point to avoid a double post).

Basically, I am looking to get started up as cheap as is possible. At this stage, I am not bothered about HD or Recording, as that would need additional LNBs on the dish (if the satellite has moved out of position, I will need to look at getting someone to do move it for me so may consider, bigger dish, more LNBs at that point).

I am pretty confident I will be able to get it to work on the PC (assuming the sat is still in right place), but what I was also looking to do was to get the Sky Box working also (. Would I need to get a Freesat card from Sky and Pair it with the box, or is there some other card, I can pair with the box.

If I did get a card paired with the box, would I be able to get anything more than Freesat? Or is that all I can get with the Sly Box? Or would I need to get a different receiver?

Ive spent ages trying to get my head round this lot, getting closer but not quite there >:<

There are no freebies with Sky UK - either you pay for the subscription stuff or you do without. And its more or less the same for all the other pay tv services at the moment - you missed the glory days of multiple services opened easily by 5 years.

There are a few minor services left open - eg ORF Austria can currently be viewed but unless you speak German it wont be of much interest!

No you will get all the FTA channels (all the freesat channels plus more on the EPG) on a Sky digibox without a viewing card providing the digibox and lnb are still working and the dish is still correctly aligned. A FreesatFromSky card (cost £25) will give you 10 extra FTV channels (not available on freesat) including 5*, 5 USA< Pick TV, Sony TV, Motors TV, Viva, Pick TV and LFC TV. A Sky subscription is only necessary to view the pay TV channels and to use recording facilities if you have a Sky+ or Sky+HD box.
 
So what is the cheapest way of getting, ESPN and Sky 1 there the channels I am interested in the most, then any other sports channels.

There is no cheapest way - you pay Sky whatever they want :D
 
Or wait for "Real Digital" (qv) if you love roller-coaster rides.
