Post 2E Reception In Cyprus

One of my cousins resides in Cyprus (East end - Paralimni). He would lke to
know the probability of being able to receive ANY SKY Channels at all on a
2.4m dish after September 2013, and into 2014?
Or is it a question of no one yet knows?

When Astra 2E launches in Summer, all we can say is that we expect its coverage and performance to be similar to 2F.

What we don't know is what Channel moves there might be from Astra 2A, which is pan-European to the new Bird - or which Beam they will be on.

Not possible to say anything of real meaning at this stage - but we will of course be running extensive Topics and collating Data at the time.

Thanks for that. As my cousin cannot receive 2F it seems likely then that he won't be able to receive 2E either.
So, do you know if 2A will continue in service at all, even if just exactly what channels might be retained on it is not known?
What happened to 2B and 2C satellites, have they closed down?

Astra 2B was shunted off to the approximate location of the 19.2E cluster some weeks ago. Currently showing as being at 19.4E and Inactive.

Astra 2C is in service at 19.2E.

As for the rest, I suspect you'll have to wait until this evening until the usual suspects return from work!

Thank you - let us hope they have some reliable info for me.
The other question now arising for them/you is which satellites for SKY are
the ones he can receive NOW, is it just 2A?

All the info is here, Carole;

As you will see, the 4 active Birds are Astra 1N, 2F and 2A, plus Eurobird 28A.

I imagine he gets everything from 2A (North & South Beams) and from Eurobird

But 1N and 2F have Narrow Beams (Which he won't get) and Wide Beams: 1N Pan-European Beam carries quite a lot of stuff which presumably he can get eg Channels on Transponders between 12148 - 12324 MHz.

2F carries very few Channels - for reasons we are not sure about.

When 2E comes into service, we expect 1N to be moved to 19.2E so assume 2E will largely take over the current duties of 1N.


And that is the state of anyone's current knowledge. I might have missed out a couple of fine details and feel sure someone will point any omissions out in due course!

So pass the link above to him and he will be able to check exactly which Birds and Beams he's getting now. The future cannot be foretold, though.

2A will be moved to a new home - ISTR 23.5E might be a possibility.

P.S. Just had a SKYPE call from my cousin in Cyprus (Paralimni). Your info was most appreciated.
It seems that all is gets right now is 2A North and 2A South. NOTHING ELSE.
Thus when 2A is moved (I gather September sort of time) he will lose all SKY channels.
Like many 100s, maybe 1000s of SKY customers outside UK he will be giving up his sub to SKY.
These people have SKY subs on UK addresses and take out their viewing cards to Cyprus, Crete, Turkey, Malta, etc etc.
SKY are not stupid, they know all this. Are they prepared to lose all that revenue?
Even SKY On-Demand requires you to have an EPG signal. What about Mr Murdoch's house in Turkey/Greece? Will he be happy to lose SKY?

I think it's more down to SES, the satellite operator, who seem to favour western Europe and are limiting the signal to the east for 2F and 2E. Perhaps it's to make room for the new Middle East beam which will spill over to the edges of south eastern Europe, who knows. It doesn't explain why they've decided to cut out a large chunk of the Nordic region.

Astra 2G (launch in 2014) will favour the east a little more but with new sharper beam technology it might still be tricky to get in the far south east of Europe and we don't even know if many Sky channels would use this satellite.
 
There'll be stuff on the Wide Beams that should be receivable - at a guess it'll be the stuff I referred to earlier that is currently on 1N Pan-European (which I bet he can get - probably just hasn't looked at the fine detail) Beam between 12148 and 12324 MHz.

As for BSkyB, they can't do just what they want >> They pay for Programme Rights based upon legit viewing numbers plus unavoidable overspill. As Satellite technology improves, overspill is reduced >> Loss of that Revenue = Increase in UK/RoI subs. QED.

BSkyB will make sure they don't suffer. As for non-UK/RoI punters, well it's always been a case of taking what's available. There's no Contractual Right to it.

I don't understand how the loss of revenue from let's say Cyprus will increase money at uk and roi. If the customer ,and that is bskyb to Astra,asks for wider beam they will get it.they have encrypted programms not free to have problems with royalties.also I don't believe that a tighter footprint to isles will benefit from something the viewers there.smaller dishes from 45cm?

What I am saying is that any Revenue BSkyB may lose from "expat" customers as mooted above by ceetee (Carole) will not worry them too much as they can recover it by increasing legitimate Subs. It's a cynical comment on how big Business will not suffer ..........................

The programmes are Encrypted with the primary aim of restricting viewing to properly subscribed customers in the UK/RoI. The fact that people use BSkyB viewing cards elsewhere is not in accordance with the Terms & Conditions which are predicated in part upon the Rights negotiated with Content Providers: So, the relationship between BSkyB and Astra (and Eutelsat) is only part of the equation. The producers of any transmitted media are a key element too and what they charge is predicated upon the legitimate (ie Uk and RoI) viewer base: If Sky wish to avail themselves of wide beams, then they will have to establish and pay for the Rights for an extended audience accordingly.
 
Its also worth pointing out that SES design the new satellites in regards to their customers wishes. This is on a public bit of information somewhere - maybe the SES facebook page.

However as we all know satellite bandwidth is a finite resource, and to be blunt its running out fast in the European part of the arc. So the sat operators are starting to double or triple up on coverage areas from existing slots.

28E - Uk, north west Europe / Nigeria, west Africa / and from the end of the year - Middle East.

9E - Eutel 9B will have 4 spotbeams on it when its launched which is going to pretty much ruin 9E as an interesting slot.

Do you think Cyprus might be within the Middle East footprint?

Even if it is, it will be carrying non-UK Channels.



ie The point of the Spot Beams is to maximise traffic and to provide services appropriate to the areas covered by the Spots.
 
Cyprus is definitely under the ME footprint, but as Tivu says that beam will be carrying ME channels - not the UK stuff. And of course thanks to frequency re-use whatever frequencies are being used for the ME beam will be lost forever to the east end of the Med. (Chances are it will be the UK spotbeam frequencies but thats not confirmed yet)

I don't think anyone knows for sure, but it is likely to take over from 1N at least. It could also take over some from 2A too.
