Now I AM confused! That suggests that SOME stuff could remain on 2A. But earlier posts suggested 2A was going to move, which would mean losing the lot as far as my cousin in sunny Cyprus is concerned.
I think it was to move to 19.2E.
Why is all this SKY/Astra/SES stuff always so shrouded in secrecy - it cannot be for commercially confidential reasons surely?
UK based Company, shouldn't it be "transparent"??
We aren't all satellite anoraks on here, some of us are just interested users, and easily confused by technical gobbly gook.

SES is based in Luxembourg. But the problem is there are so many things going on right now it is hard to know excetly what the plans are. They are trying to take over Eutelsat frequencies, they are replacing old satellites and the temporary satellite 1N, they have delays due to rocket issues, and so everything is a bit muddled up.

What is certain is that Astra 2A will go at some point fairly soon, we just aren't sure exactly when. There may be some overlap after Astra 2E turns up, there may not be. I don't think it'll go to 19.2E though as Astra 2B is already there for backup. Then we have Astra 2G to figure out next year...

As the intended UK audience remains unaffected at all times, changes "up there" are totally seamless and transparent.

The only people affected are those getting fortuitous reception on the fringes and those using BSkyB Subscriptions outwith the Terms & Conditions (into which, effectively, Rights issues are factored: The latter are complex and expensive): I can't imagine why SES-Astra would feel obliged to provide detailed information (which may, in any event, prove to be wrong!) for the benefit of serendipitous consumers (Remembering once again that UK customers don't need to know as they retain a continuous and full service).

People outside the UK (And RoI) take what they can get, but SES-Astra or BSkyB, Freesat etc. have no obligation whatsoever to fringe viewers..

As for 2A, whenever it is replaced, the new Bird has Wide Beams as well as UK spots, so the best case is that there will still be Encrypted Channels on the Wide Beam - but how many we simply don't know. In any event, they'd require use of a BSkyB Card so anyone doing so would (as now) be in breach of the permitted Terms & Conditions.

Its ALL to do with commercial confidentiality!

For example SES announced a few months ago they were taking over most if not all of Eutelsat's frequencies from October 2013. They have been planning this since they signed an agreement with Deutsches Telecom to take over the old Kopernicus frequencies at 28.5E in 2005. But it was kept secret until the beginning of this year. Should this happen (and its by no means certain atm as its mired in the courts) 2F will almost certainly take over a lot of the Eutelsat frequencies. And at that point whatever Cyprus currently gets on the Eutelsat 28A widebeams will vanish as well.

2A is definitely being withdrawn from 28E, although exactly when we dont know. We do know that the BBC are moving to 2E not long after launch so 2E is taking over some of the 1N frequencies.

Whether the full replacement of 2A will take place by 2E or 2G is currently unknown but we can confidently say that Cyprus has no more than a year or so left of uk tv via satellite.

Thanks very much for that. Well no more than a year or so is better than September which was the sort of date being mooted
earlier on the forum (if I read it all correctly!).
I will pass this info on to my cousin, who will no doubt pass it around the general chat forums out there.
I guess my other cousin in Spain will also be affected, but should be OK if he buys a bigger dish (1.5m upsized to 2.4m say).

Remind him nothing is certain these days. Its educated guesswork until the satellites are launched and in service. We got blindsided with the speed 2B was run down and traffic relocated to the other birds

As for Spain thats a whole new kettle of fish - some areas of the south coast and into Portugal get no 2F signal on 3-4m dishes as there seems to be a very very deep signal null over them. Theres another one up in the north east of Spain too.

Your Cousins would be welcome to join this Forum themselves if that might help keep them up to speed. We have a Membership that spans the World, albeit with greatest emphasis on Europe.

And it's also helpful to us if we get signal reports and other information from as many locations as possible.

Why should it have? its the same basic sat with the same basic spec so expect the same basic reception profile.

Except SES have published a slightly different European beam so there could be differences there. If it was identical why not just publish the same footprint as 2F?
