power cable

Just purchased a new 46" samsung smart tv.Is it smart by name and smart by nature?It's to replace my old phillips 42" but having fitted it to the existing bracket the power cord is too short.I've patched in a new length with terminal block and it won't power up.I also tried just taping the cables together with insulating tape but still no joy.Is it sensing a minute reduction in the power and won't power up?Very strange.Would appreciate some help here.Regards.

Did you test it working before you hacked into the cable, using an extension lead ?

The chance are you've made a poor connection somewhere - when you say "terminal block", I do sincerely hope you don't mean chocolate block? If that is what you've used, get rid of it and fit a proper in-line connector that doesn't have exposed screws.

There isn't the slightest chance that the set is responding in the way you suggest: These sets are made for many markets and can normally function down to around 180 V. In the UK our nominal voltage has been 230v (NOT 240v, as many seem to think) +10%, -10%. That means it can vary between from 207 - 253V as a matter of course. Creating an extension (properly done) won't have an perceptible effect.

Reminds me of the old radios that used the power cord wires as a resistive dropper. It came to pass that some people shortened the length to 'tidy it up' where the mains socket was close to the radio - and blew the valves in the set

Cheers TIVU.I used plastic terminal block with the screws set into the plastic.Where would I get the inline connector?I had it working before I cut the cable and it's now working with a full length figure of 8 cable.Strange!

Actually I'm sure that I read some time ago that as part of voltage harmonisation across Europe at 230v we didn't actually change anything except the top limit of allowable voltage fluctuation. This then brought the mean voltage down to 230 without doing a thing! What the + and - figures are nowadays is therefore anyone's guess!

I have a fluorescent handlamp at home with a resistive lead to drop the voltage (probably to 110 at a guess). There are dire warnings not to leave the lead coiled up while using the lamp!

In some cases, transformer taps needed changing for supplies to some industrial plant. But otherwise, as you say, the Harmonisation was largely cosmetic. The 10% allowable variation is not guesswork, but law, and the ESI is required to comply. I contributed to the drafting, application and enforcement of the relevant Regs. implementing European Law. At inception, the tolerance was +10%, -6% (IIRC), but was later amended once more.

Voltage does fluctuate for several reasons, primarily load variations. The design of networks at national and local level which cater for the nominal voltage and it's upper and lower limits is by no means an easy task.

It's not actually beyond the bounds of possibility that what you recall reading may have been written by me (in a former hat or three!).

Yes I know but the old cable is plastered into the wall.I don't want cable on the outside.
