Only had it two years but boy have I used it. I was expecting it to break down, but I not a total power shut down. I removed the cover and replaced the little clear fuse where the power chord is, but no luck.

Could there be a simple solution? And yes, I changed the plug fuse, too. Just in case. Thanks in advance. :D

Err, the fuses are there to protect - Just replacing a blown one, in 999 cases out of 1000, is not going to work.

Best you can do is examine the circuit board(s) carefully to see if you can spot the true duff component. Some failures will lead to visible charring/discolouration/rupture etc. Sadly some - eg duff voltage regulator - won't be easily apparent.

I have a Funai (Argos) DVD Recorder which I no longer use - It was bought not only to record, but to act as a SECAM Transcoder for 5W Analogues.

In the former case, we now have a PVR and in the latter case those Analogues are imminently defunct.

So, it might be "surplus to requirements" if you can't repair yours: I see you are North East resident, so maybe we could reach a deal not involving p&p.

Not promising anything, just airing a possibility.

Take a look at the big capacitors in the power supply near the fuse inside the box. If the tops are bulging up then they (at least) need replacing.

A common problem in some satellite receivers especially if they've been kept in a small cubby hole with poor circulation. You haven't been doing that to the recorder, have you?

Thanks!!!

Seems like a lot of technical stuff I know I'm not up to. I think my only option is to salvage the hard drive. :)

Whoops! Mine would not be a suitable replacement for yours .............. no HDD, just a DVD drive.

I asked a friend if he knew someone who could fix yet. Yeah for 80 quid.

I may as well buy a replacement on Ebay.

I miss the hard drive, Tivu. I used to store all my favs on it. :)

Did he say what he would be doing for that price?

Well tell us so that we can tell you

a) whether it's a reasonable price - and

b) whether it's a feasible DIY repair.

Well, I don't think £80 is a reasonable price as it's probably a very small fault, and he knows that. It'll probably just cost him a tenner to fix and he's gonna charge me £80.

I've actually seen the exact same DVD recorder model on Ebay, so I'm gonna get that. No way am I paying £80 for a repair. :)

But you still haven't told us what he said he was going to do for that money.

Having said that if you can get a replacement for the same (or even less) it would be stupid to pay more.

I'd still like to know exactly what he was going to replace though.

Was the internal fuse actually blown ..?
..and to what degree ?
If the wire inside the fuse has simply melted and gone open circuit ..then occasionally you get away with a simple replacement fuse (but not in your case)
So ...was the fuse blown Black inside the glass tube ?
If it was then you have indeed a faulty power supply ..
These are switch mode ..and usually capacitors or mains spikes are the route cause..
Problem is such massive failure (primary/mains side of psu) usually takes out the Power FET ...and switch mode IC ....(often an 8 pin surface mount device)....also resistors blow open showing physical damage or holes blown in the body ...also ..the 4 pin optocoupler is a likely candidate for replacement ..
This is the sort of job I normally repair for around 40 - 50 quid ...
Not an unreasonable amount when you take into account ..any suspect electrolytic caps are also replaced..
On average around 20 - 25 quids worth of parts ...and a similar amount for labour ..
No one can work for free ..and customers rarely understand this ..thinking the repair should be done for the cost of the parts.
If you want to take a photo of the power supply pcb (both sides) and post it up ...I'll try to highlight the suspect components.
If the mains fuse is intact ..then its lkely a short on the secondary (LT) side of the psu ...and a whole different story as _anything_ is suspect ...primarily diodes ..and/or electrolytic caps

I don't think we're ever going to find out. We're wasting our time offering answers.

Pity really Paul ...as I make my living doing this sort of repair daily ...
And I'm old school insofaras ..I passionately hate the throw away society we now live in ..
Another lump of landfill ...and more revenue for the govt in the form of import duties.
I perhaps wouldn't feel so bad if we actually produced such units here ..but we don't ..
Sadly the only thing we can make/offer in this country is masive credit/debt....bacon sandwiches ...a decent haircut ...and an optional nail buffing ..
