Premiere to swop cards in hacker battle

During the second quarter of the year German pay TV operator Premiere will swop all the outstanding smart cards to better combat piracy of its signal, the company said. The past few months Premiere has been hit hard with several hacks of its encryption system, Nagravision from Kudelski.

The company blames certain “imported satellite receivers”, that “criminal hackers” have been able to modify in order to receive protected signals illegally. The new generation smart cards should prevent any new hacks from happening. The pay TV company said there are no plans to switch encryption systems.

At year end, Premiere said it has 4,279,000 subscribers, 3,651,000 of which are direct subscriptions and a further 628,000 are subscribed via Unitymedia and Arena. Premiere will annoucne its fukl 2007 results on Thursday, February 14th.
