I just have cancelled Sky contract and they don't want the (white) card back. Now I am using it in a Dreambox to view free channels. However I have read that if they deactivate the card, it would be useless for "Freesat from Sky" ones. My simple question is is there a way to keep it activated?

Or will it be deactivated automatically if they don't send "keep alive" signals to my card for a while?

It will stay alive for the basic Free to View channels.

You can keep the current entitlements a bit longer if you block emm update in cccam. Add the following line into your config file. Pick which ever one you need dependant on which slot your card is in.

Block EMM for Bottom Slot :- B: /dev/sci0 07

Block EMM for Top Slot :- B: /dev/sci1 07

Your card will not update while this line is in your config file :D

Make sure you remove the line a few days before the cards entitlements run out. If it goes black before the entitlements run out then just return it to the Sky box for a few hours and it should re-activate as just a FTV card (Freesat channels only)

Thanks for the reply. But there is something I couldn't understand. First, why is it necessary to unblock the EMM messages before the entilements run out and, second, what will happen after entilements run out?

Just a note to make myself clear: "Freesat" is not the same as "Freesat from Sky". Freesat, AFAIK, is FTA and requires no card at all. The latter, although does not requires subscription, still requires a Sky viewing card and normally a Sky box to view.

True, but the number of Channels requiring the Sky Viewing Card is very small indeed. Most of the FreesatfromSky Channels are the same FTA ones of which Freesat is also a subset.

Fiver, Five US, Sky Three plus a bit of Regionalisation for PSB Channels is all the Sky Viewing Card does.

Well, but if the number of additional channels a Sky viewing card offers over the FTA ones is so small, what is the point of buying such the card? (If I recall correctly Sky have been selling the blue card with a small yellow house on it for years for about 20 quids or more)

And back to my original question, what will happen after the entilements run out? Black screen?

Whats the point:

1) the card puts the correct BBC & ITV regions, and allocates the correct C4 & C5 macro (advertising) areas onto the box

2) provides access to the following:

C5 (some areas only)
Fiver / +1
Five US / +1
LTV
Viva

3) puts C4 +1 onto the epg

After entitlements run out - black screens on the above channels until the card is reactivated by being left in a Sky box.

Not much now - see my previous Post and Analoguesat's for details.

BUT, not so very long ago, all ITV output was Encrypted (FTV), as was Channel 4's, Five and, if I recall correctly, even BBC was.

Things have moved on.

The only reason I have one of the new White Cards for my own Sky box is 'cos Sky gave it me as a free replacement for a Yellow House one I bought for the sole purpose of watching the last home Ashes series but one (Satellite being essential owing to lack of Terrestrial reception here).

What i was trying to say is that if you have cancelled the contract and if you still have Premium channels on the card, by blocking EMMs the card will not get the signal telling it to remove the premium entitlements, so in theory you should be able to still watch them until the current entitlements run out :D

Once the card entitlements run out you will not be able to open anything with it at all until it updates again.

So in essence you could get a few months free viewing whenever you cancel your sub.
So you could ring up and cancel your subscription then wait 30 days until notice has been served ,let entitlements update to 6-8 weeks into the future ,then block emm and you get 6-8 weeks free viewing.
Then resubscribe and cancel again after a few weeks repeating the cycle .
Would that work ?

I think when you re-subscribe you will have to take a new contract for x amount of months so although your theory is correct I dont think it works like that in practice.

I doubt it ,you could subscribe for 2 months then disconnect for 2 months .Then repeat.
As long as Sky are making some money off you they are happy.
I suppose its a bit of hassle but I'm only speculating .
