Hi

We are going to build a private house in Germany (suburb of Frankfurt am Main), but I'm not quite sure if my plans for satellite TV Setup are correct. Can you help me to clarify what is needed and plan properly.

The general idea is next:
- Place the dish with LNB Head like (DUR-line Select 75/80) with motor on the roof of the building
- Buy the DVBSky S960CI USB Box or other Linux compatible receiver
- Connect it to TVHeadEnd on raspberry pi or in-house server located in the basement of our house
- Get the SAT Signal from satellites with UK, German and Russian channels (maybe also US channels)
- Deliver channels from TVHeadEnd over IP to IPTV enabled TV, Amazon Fire TV stick or IPTV player on IOS (setup of CATV, CAT7 and WIFI networks in house will be done accordingly)

Will this work in location shown on pictures below?

If so, I have few newbie questions:
  1. Is 80 cm dish enough? Or if I will take 1m dish, would it be OK for the motor?
  2. Can someone recommend better / alternative receiver with HD quality for Linux-based setup?
  3. What kind of motor will work best?
  4. Which LNB Head I need? Make it sense to take Dual LNB for some future use or put wideband if required for some Russian channels?
I'd like to setup everything myself and happy to hear any advise.
Thanks in advance.

There are very few American entertainment channels available in Europe - if you want the big networks you would be better off finding a streaming solution.

If you want the UK Sky pay channels you will need to use the Sky box & source a subscription. The BBC & ITV channels may need a bigger dish due to the tight beam used - an 80cm may be on the limit and will need to be accurately setup.

And in germany: Don't forget to check the obligatory lightning protection regulations and earthing (Potential Ausgleich) regulations!
They are much more strict, than in the Netherlands, and I guess than in the UK.
see Satanlage richtig erden for example.

Lightning protection on the roof is rather expensive. Is the outside wall a possibility? On a wall, lightning protection isn't always obligatory, I've read.

Yeah, if its hard, then alternative solution for US channels is to get them through IPTV. SKY UK Subscription is possible (not sure if SKY Germany will tolerate this), but I thought to get some UK channels for free as well (mailnly for kids).

Good point. I will have to check this.
From the top of my head the Building plan of the area (Bebauungsplan) foresees the use of the roofs, but the walls for antennas. Theoretically I can put antenna on top of Garage, so it will be lower than roof ridge of 2 storey building.

The free channels on the European beam wont be any problem in Germany - its just the ones on the UK spots are likely to be harder.

FYI: Here is a very short summing up of where a dish can be put without lightning protection (green places in the picture): xxx.satshop-heilbronn.de/Blitzschutz-Erdung-Potentialausgleich-PA-DIN-Norn-16mm-quadrat-stromschlag
(giving this link this way is no offence to forum rules, I hope?)

You'll have to check if your garage is in the "geschützten Bereich".

Don't put a dish on the building if you don't have to. Your life will be so much easier id the dish is easily accessible. I have to visit mine a lot in the winter to clean off the snow. I'd have it on the ground if there weren't trees in the way.
