Deactivate your antivirus software in the system tray. Maybe it meddles with the stream trying to do its work.

Thanks, figured that was what you meant, but as the problem occurs on a file being played from the laptop hard drive I think the problem is with the graphics bit of the CPU. Thanks anyway, all ideas are welcome as I´m going nuts over this!

That's another trail to follow, stuff going on in the background and eating up resources. I can't yet fully believe that this AMD can be that much worse than the substandard Intel Celeron laptop in a 5 years old laptop here, which has zero problems with hd streaming or playback.

What's the cpu % when doing nothing on the laptop ?

Replace the hard drive with an SSD drive, you will be amazed at the change in speed.

And it's OK to go nuts, as long as someone is not chasing you with a nut cracker.

OK! Did just that and ran the file I just copied from the HDD connected to the STB, and you are right! The CPU is now running at 27% as opposed to 55% when using VLC :) , BUT I have no picture at all, just a Jackson Pollock
Will try it on a live stream but getting the big hammer out soon!
Just tried the live stream, frozen picture:-saw

Just made this screenshot of simultaneous streaming of 6 TV channels (one of them is from 28,5*E UK beam) plus one is showing on TV screen. VLC player works perfect, I like it.

Done some research into the CPU, it appears that even when it was released in 2013 it was noted that it could not cope with high graphics and was not recommended for the latest high spec games.
Think this is why it cannot cope with HD images :(

Any possibility that the CPU could be upgraded?

I guess in theory it could be changed out, but at what cost? Only really want it now and again , for example when the Ryder Cup clashed with Strictly Come Dancing. Saves upsetting SWMBO by sending her to the bedroom to watch things!
May also be useful occasionally for things in 4.2.2 etc, but so be it. Never had it before, so will not really miss it that much.

I can't believe that the hardware isn't good enough. Is it an E2-3800?
Code:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-A-Series-E2-3800-Notebook-Processor.105029.0.html
"By default, hardware acceleration is disabled" <- Have you checked VLC settings?
https://wiki.videolan.org/VLC_GPU_Decoding/
4.2.2 might be a problem though.

Yes it is an E2-3800 with Radeon HD 8200, so I went direct to the AMD website and used their system checker to get latest driver. It recommended the cut down version, so I loaded that, it loaded a load of sh*t I didn´t want and failed on the main driver. Which means every time I switch on the laptop I get told the latest version is available .
Sod it , went for the full version , which downloaded ok, but still won´t play the copied file without frame jumps , but at least I don´t get the annoying message telling me a new version is available :)
There is an option to download new chip set drivers , but is it worth it?
This sums it up for me......
