problems with Freesat

Hi all,

perhaps somebody can help with my problem! First off I'm a complete novice when it comes to satellite TV I've only ever used cable or inbuilt Freeview. With that in mind, I've just moved into a new house where the previous owners had Sky. The dish is still in place, so great thinks I, I'll buy a Freesat box and away I go. So I bought myself a Goodmans GFSAT100SD Freesat box and an F type connector for the cable that's lying on the floor in the front room, connector to cable, cable to box, scart to tv, turn on and............Nothing No auto signal detect screens, nothing, just the 'Enter postcode' screen and then zip, zero, zilch, so, any ideas as to what the problem might be?!

Could be that the dish is not receiving a signal; maybe dish alignment.
I would be inclined to test the freesat receiver on another dish to be sure

Thanks for the speedy response, unfortunately I don't have access to another dish, is there a way to check if the dish is working, sorry for the stupidness of the question but Sky don't deactivate them when the service has been cut off?!
 
Without a receiver or meter it's impossible.

No apology needed :) - no, Sky don't deactivate them. If your dish is correctly aligned then you should be able to receive Freesat.

One other thing to check is the F connector. If this is not correctly fitted then you won't get a signal and the receiver won't be a able to verify your postcode.

Also , how do you know that the cable that's in the house comes from the dish ? A lot of the time i find it's just an old aerial cable . Look at the dish and try to follow the cable in , just in case .
 
Good point that with checking the cable but an even better point is to check if the LNB is ok.
I spent a lot of time 2 weeks ago in N.Ireland on the roof of my sisters place trying to get things running.
Put on a new LNB & low & behold she was up & running. Water had got into the old one as it was not used for some time!!!!!!!
Another point is to check the cable connection on the LNB!!
 
Hi all,

Just to say thanks for your advice I'll have a look at all the points you suggest, one thing however that has occured to me I've just had some damp proof work done and guess where they've drilled one of the holes? Yep, right above where the cable comes into the front room, I suspect that they may have drilled straight through the bl**dy cable!! :mad:
