Hello,

So today, I picked up my Fibo Gregorian 1.2m dish. The dish is in decent condition - there's a dent on the edge but this shouldn't affect reception. I strung the dish and it doesn't seem to be warped, which is good news. The guy I got it from paid £750 for it back in the day - that's a HUGE amount of money, even now, for a dish of such a size. He said he got it to watch football from some satellite but he wasn't sure which. Thor 1 maybe when it was very weak here in UK? But 1.2m wasn't really enough for that anyway. He said he was going to take it to the dump(!) if it didn't sell on eBay....

It does need some work. The motor I think it's a throw-away. I could try and sort it but I don't think it's worth it as it's missing the elevation bit and there's a crack in it as well. Plus I would need to modify my VBox to get 5V out of it for the pulse sensor. I will probably put it on my Channel Master polar mount but this will need some metal work as the back of the dish for the mounting isn't flat. I will use a combination of the original mount for the curved bit, then cut it half way, attach a steel plate to the back using angle iron and that would then go on the PM. The whole thing will probably go on a K-T-K bracket on the wall.

By the way, where can I get a 3 inch pole? I looked everywhere on the net but more people only have 1.5" or 2". The CM polar mount has a 3" mounting. I *could* fit it on a 2" pole using my adaptor rings but I'd prefer doing it properly.

The LNB needs to be replaced as there's an old Grundig-type one on there - of a C120 variant. Any recommended models out there that would match the performance of a Black Ultra?

The dish is at my parents. When I brought it in, the neighbour was like "oh - more junk".... I nearly threw some junk at her. Silly woman.

Here are the pics.

Definitely a candidate for refurbishment Captain. Keep us informed on your progress.

I got my 3" steel pole from my local metals supplier just two streets away from me, delivered free the same morning. Surely somewhere similar in your area?

Will try the locals Llew - there's one not far from here. Will probably get them to manufacture the bracket as it's easier and probably cheaper than buying the bits myself and struggling!

The Fibo motor assembly is beyond repair. The nylon teeth are broken so it's not worth it. Shouldn't be hard, just need to get someone to weld three pieces of metal together... Will create a cardboard model of what I want done...

Not too fussed about the motor. It probably can be fixed if the nylon roller is replaced - I haven't tested it any further than that yet. The seller was an old man (70+) and said that it didn't even have a motor - so I guess it was mainly used in a fixed installation.

Fair doos ..
Even without a functioning motor it's still a beautiful bit of kit..
Looking forward to the reception reports...which may well surprise us all..

Indeed.

I for one am looking forward to a spot of "handbags at three focal lengths".

Yep, will certainly be interesting to see the comparison between my Channel Master (which isn't set up at the moment) and this Fibo. The Fibo is slightly larger than the CM at 120cm by 137cm, but it's not a great deal. I guess it's the efficiency that matters. My most testing satellite will be Amos 3 Euro beam, which is barely lockable with the Channel Master - so will be interesting if the Fibo fares better.

hi - Captain Jack-
the dish looks in nice condition :-righton --- the fibo dishes are a very nice piece of kit :)
pity about the mount/motor - but it think a channel master mount will be a better/robust option once a conversion bracket has been made
untill earlier tonight i,v never tried for amos with my fibo dish but after a little elevation tuning - i got a reasonable signal on 10806 H 30000 -- Music Box - etc
i can also receive the same t.p. ok with the channel master 1.2 maybe the footprint is better for me here in the north ???
i can,t accurately compare the dishes/performance as they are connected to different receivers and switches etc at the moment -- they are both good dishes - and i think will be quite closely matched to be honest --- hopefully the fibo will have the edge :)
my fibo is connected currently to a p.c./ skystar2 -- pic below taken earlier

Several Amos 3's OK here tonight with my Gibertini 1.25. Example: 11.258H Extra TV. Yes, will be interesting to see if Captain Jack's Fibo can do Amos 3 where he is.

Yes, Xtra TV is what I am after. Not that I am going to watch it but it's a benchmark one. For example, on my CM, 11389H was drifting in and out of lock, with little chance of an actual scan let alone being able to watch it. Some of Amos 2 transponders are visible on my Penta 85 (10722 and 10759 are just about there). With my CM, most, if not all, Amos 2 European TPs are lockable/watchable. But Amos 3 has eluded me so far.

My strongest on Amos 3 is TA 3 on 10806 V 30000 which comes in nearly 24/7.

Nothing easy about that one CJ ..
My poor old TD110 struggles to get occasional frozen images on a roughly 4 minute cycle ...
as low as 2db ..as high as 5db (F15)..but even when the F15 reports a lock ...moving images are tricky at best ..
..and I had to bypass the diseqc switching and feed the F15 direct..
Your Fibo _should_ do much better..

Thanks VS. You must get a stronger signal up north from Amos 3 than I do here as I had far less with my 1.2m CM. Mind you, that was through 2 DiSEqC switches and a 35-40m cable run, so maybe that was a factor as well.

I think the TD110 plays a big part in reception capabilities..
..that plus the high gain factor of the F15

It is rather an exceptional dish for its size imo...but then I did retro-fit it with a long neck black ultra about 12 months ago ...which basically gave it a new lease of life.
approx 20 mtrs of cable but the removal of any switching is almost essential for extreme fringe stuff.

Hi Captain Jack et al,

I have found that the best time for reception of Amos 2/3 is between 6am and 9am
