I've been told that if the Protek box isn't connected all the time to the Internet then no channels can be watched... can anyone verify if at least the FTAs can be viewed? Thinking this is the box for me but no i/net connection yet near the tv...

Yes, you can watch FTA channels without a Broadband connection on this receiver.
If you want the best from this receiver, then yes, it is advisable to have it connected to the internet at all times,you will then receive automatic software updates as well as channel auto updates. If you install the alternative software you will receive the "Gift package" which is available and has been for some time.
As you have no internet connection near your tv, why not invest in a pair of Ethernet home plugs.Your problem is then resolved.
This box is virtually a plug and play after the initial set up,no more worrying about updates etc.Hope this helps you make your mind up.

What do you mean by ' install the alternative software'? There's another way to update these boxes? Yes, I've heard of the homeplugs way, but will prob drag a wire over to the corner! If I purchase the box with the updated software on, I guess the gifts will be live for a while at least before the screen goes dark...?
