Question about FreeSat regarding aerial lead

Hi, I'm thinking of getting a FreeSat box for my room before everything switches over to digital (i only have analogue at the moment). The problem is, the aerial lead that I currently have in my room is poor and has bad reception. Because of this, when I've had Freeview in the past I only get some of the channels.

Does FreeSat, on the other hand, not require an aerial lead to be put into the back? Because we already have a Sky dish in our house and it would therefore make sense to me to buy a FreeSat box for my room if it doesnt require an aerial lead, rather than fork out a lot of money to get a new aerial put into my room AND have to buy a Freeview box.

Also Ive heard that I could possibly buy an old sky box from ebay for a low price and then buy a FreeSat viewing card for about 20 pound?

You dont need an aerial lead for Sky or Freesat boxes.

HOWEVER you would need another cable from the dish - and possibly a replacement lnb on the dish (the bit on the end of the arm).

A FreesatfromSky card only gives you three or four extra channels - only you know if its worth the extra expense.
 
Thanks for the quick reply :) Do you have any idea how much another cable from the dish would cost, and would I have to get someone to come round and fit it for me?

Ten quid if you get the bits from B&Q and do it yourself. 50-60 quid if you call an installer in.

DONT even think about D-I-Y if you dont have completely safe access to the dish or you arent confident on ladders.

There is no reason why you could not do it yourself, you need to check how many outputs the existing lnb has, then if necessary purchase a quad output, the length of cable will to some extent determine the cost but most DIY stores sell sat cable CT 100 by the metre

I take it you mean running a cable from the IF out of the existing sky box to the bedroom. Yes you could however you would be restricted to watching whatever is showing on the existing sky box, whereas using a quad output lnb would give you channel selection completely independant of the existing sky box
