Hey buddy ..
finally got around to taking apart the seized 1224 that was donated to me ..
Removed the 2 red tensioner plugs/screws and the rather large springs..
So was the able to remove the main axel and prime gear ..with the bearing race ..
To be sure there are no metal fragments and to examine the teeth of the gear ..plus the worm thread I am removing all the old grease ..which is nasty and black ..
Once cleaned and examined I want to reassemble after applying new grease to both the prime gear ...the worm drive and bearing race(s) ..
What do you recommend for this ??
I figured you were the guy to ask since you have already done this on your re-furb.
I was thinking a clear lithium grease or maybe a copper grease ..
?
what would you advise

Not really, I did not finish re-furb yet and it is long way to and time to go till the end. But, about the grease, I would say- copper grease! Last years I am only using this type of grease, especially for INOX. It sticks well to the surface and do not disappear long time, also makes good cover against any moisture.

Cheers buddy ..
Copper grease it is then ..
Time to get some ordered..
Also possibly order a spray solvent to get the old grease fully out of the teeth and thread ..
I could soak but would rather not dip the nylon gears ..
any advice on what is out there by way of spray solvents ?

Have no idea, I do not use them. Where possible use piece of rag. For rusted threads (if not possible to change to INOX) use metal brush and then layer of copper-grease.

use water soluble engine cleaner like" Gunk" other makes are availible, they are non corrosive and leave no residue wash off in water.

Never seen the inside of that gear box on the 1224. Thanks for posting the picture.

I never liked Gunk. It always seemed to turn slimy when washed down with water instead of turning to an emulsion. I much preferred Jizer which did the job properly. There are others which are all better than Gunk.
