How do you fool an automatic focus camera to look at an object when it's behind a glass pane ?

Or should I be taking the shot at a distance that ensures both subject and glass are about the same ?

Focus on something at about the same distance but not behind glass. Hold the shutter button half down to keep the focus distance. Go back to the spider and move the camera in and out until it looks to be in focus. Take photo.

If it is printed A4 I could use it to terrify SWMBO. :-rub
