You are in first place. You can quite easily pass the last placed person - you lap him. :D

Unfortunately it is a sad fact that mental arithmetic is hardly practiced at all now since the introduction of the calculator into the school curriculem. I am sure some people would skip a step and mentally go 40 + 30 + 20 + 10 = 100, but as 1000 + 1000 + 1000 + 1000 was already stored in their buffers they would then add another 1000 to get the wrong answer.

I have to say I impressed myself with my answers to all the questions

I do however find the power of the human mind quite amazing and whilst having seen the sentence many times before still think it is amazing that we have the ability to process that garbage and make some sense out of it

I got Mary and the blind man but I was a bit quick on the first one! Made mess of the adding up which disappoints me as I'm usualy good with mental arithmatic.

True - and then you could potentially end up in any position, except last, but then no-one specified the length of the race, so if it was a 100m sprint, you'd hardly have laps?
 
In the absence of any exact race lengths in the question you have to make some assumptions. :D

Saw the same subject use on the national geographic channel over a year ago, it was used to promote that channel!

By the way I could read this version ( am not dyslexic )... but it helps...
