I now have a 1TB drive in my two bay NAS box.I did buy two but one was faulty, and went back.Sticking with one for now.
I did think that I would be able to put one of the 500 gig drives that came out of the NAS into one of my external caddys, and cherry pick the files that I wanted to put back. However W7 cannot read it and wants to format it.
I ran a live ubuntu 14.10 tried that .It sees the drive as 524MB 'EXT3' It just sees four folders. ftp. api_result_txt. Change_Nas_Prog_attr. opt. only opt has content look to be the NAS system folders. It appears that I cannot read the rest of the drive.
Gparted sees the full size drive.
I have put the two 500GB drives back into the nas box.No problem I can read all the files normally
There must be some way of reading the drive surely.knowing me I am probably missing something simple.:)
Edit I now have both drives open in Ubuntu there is a different folder on one of them.AJXplorer.Normally used to read the drive remotely.I am getting the idea that the only way to transfer the files is by using the nas box.Pics not very good .
The NAS is a Dlink DNS-320
Please advise me.:)

Yeah, it's not really possible. NAS systems usually utilise a RAID array of some sort and the point of that is that the data is split between multiple drives for speedier access. A 100Mb file on a RAID volume can (and usually is) physically be split between other drives in the array.

As far as I know, it's not possible to read the files from a drive that was part of a RAID array.

Thank you Captain. The nas was setup as raid 1 which I believe is mirrored.
It means that the two 500GB drives are useless unless in the nas box.
If the nas box packed up I would need another one to read them.
It is not a problem for me.the drives only have photos and clonezilla images lots of old stuff on them.Nothing really important Most on DVD anyway.
I just wondered why I could not read them from a caddy.

Even in a mirrored configuration, it's part of an "array", which essentially has its own filing system.

I am sure there are tools available to extract information from RAIDed hard drives but I haven't looked into this.

I have just added another hard drive in my nas. And it formatted the drives in ext4.

I mounted them as jbod.

All working well now.

My dlink has got custom firmware for it, with lots off addons :-)

What make nas have you got?

Thats what I was wondering are there programs to read the drives.
As I said in the first post I thought that I would be able to transfer the files that I wanted from the old drives onto the 1TB nas drive.
As it stands the information on those drives is unavailable unless put back into the NAS.
I did intend to reformat one of the 500GB drives and keep the other incase I needed anything off it in the future. It seems not to be possible to do that.
I will reinstall them and transfer the bits that I want to another drive then reformat them.

Yup RAID1 is a straight mirror - if you lose one drive the data is safe, and the NAS will continue to work with one drive. Sling a replacement in for the failed drive and it will rebuild the array back to its mirror.

Was that raid really up and working? From the screenshot, one hd is almost full and the other almost empty. That doesn't seem like a mirror to me.
I don't know about dlink but chances are they are using cheap hardware and a linux software raid. In that case they should be readable outside the nas, mounted as a raid volume.
A peek at a dlink forum, they had 4 partitions on it? Confused. Hard to give advise without hands on.

Edit: Oh, sorry. One was a 1tb drive in the screenshot.
