Receiving bbc in haugesund, norway

I had to buy a new satellite receiver to receive BBC in HD. Super quality! (NRK only sends in HD ready in Norway, very poor picture)

Sattelite receiver is a cheap KOQIT from ebay, approx. £25. I bought 4 of them... Model K1-AC3.

Anyway, it works great, but on BBC HD I have a problem: After a while, the text sometimes (subtitles) get stuck and freeze on the screen, it stays there even if you change channel. It may freeze at top, and stay there, while subtitles below change. I then have to reset by taking the main power on/off.

This may happen once in a while, and only happen on BBC.

Questions:

Suggestions for new cheap satellite receiver I can buy with more stable software?

How can I upgrade my existing one? I plug in the wifi etc. but after upgrade same problem... where can I get the latest software for this unit?

I have 4 boxes similar of this model, would love to do a software upgrade to avoid problem... Picture quality and sound is superb on unit, menus so so...
FTA scanning works great, no problems.

Hope someone can help, kinda anoying the subs get stuck...

Octagon SX88+ might be a good choice.

PS: what sat dish are you using ("bigger" is definitely going to be "better", regardless of the receivers that you use! ) ?

PPS: in the vast majority of cases, f/w upgrades won't make any difference to receiver sensitivity!

I use 0,85cm. Signal is great, but heavy rain is a killer, so I plan to upgrade to 1.2m if I can find one. Dish is very difficult to align, very weak signal so difficult to adjust. Motor has some "slack" so I am not using it at the moment. Problem is that there has been ALOT of shit weather blocking the signal. So I need 1.2m for rainy days...

Everything is fine, but subtitles sometimes sticks to the screen and just hangs there. Where and how can I do a software upgrade of this little baby?

I have 4 units so I am keen on doing an upgrade. I would prefer doing an upgrade by USB stick. I have tried using WiFi, but no luck.

With a dish that "small", f/w updates are not going to make any difference because the issues you are experiencing are due to low signal strength - you really need to get a much bigger dish!

Not being in Norway, I can't be sure - but I'm guessing that you should probably aim for at least a 110-125cm dish.

Signal strength is fine, the problem is that the software has a bug concerning the subtitles. Picture is perfectly fine, signal strength is fine. Signal strength is approx. 90% and quality 70% if weather is good. I live on the coast of Norway, not the inland! So I am 100% sure this is a fault in the software concerning the subtitle decoding and displaying. Other full HD channels do not have this problem, only BBC... but I am going to upgrade to 1.2m but still I will have the same problem. As I mentioned, A hard reset every hour or half hour gets the subs rolling again after it freezes. Sometimes a subtitles freezes, and the new subs show ok. It's like the software forgets to erase a subtltle and just let it hang there, very anoying...

Good (maybe??), your issue does not appear (at least to you!) to be mainly signal strength - but as you have "rain fade" problems (which are very symptomatic of low signal strength!) then you will need to get a larger dish, or else you need to replace your existing sat receivers by "something better" (the SX88+ comes to mind again) because, AFAIK, no-one here uses those and so we probably cannot offer advice specific to them.

OTOH . if you want a "permanent" solution, then upgrade both the dish and the receivers as previously suggested.

Can you somehow choose the type of subtitles you watch, in your menus?
I can choose between the DVB-type subtitles, and 'normal' (=teleTXT-type?) subtitles, in my present receiver.

My old XSAT410 receivers also got a bit mixed up between the types of subtitles, IIRC.

This would be what I would suggest too! The BBC channels have both DVB subtitles and older-style teletext ones available (the teletext ones are used by Sky Pay TV receivers, whereas the DVB ones are used by Freesat boxes - regular FTA receivers can usually view both types).

Your issue does sound like a bug with the receiver, if you can't get the subtitles to work properly then it may be worth changing to something like an Octagon SX88+ (Or an Edision, which are similar boxes with the same sort of firmware). These can be bought for around 50 € and are pretty well reviewed by users on this forum!

Its not obvious from the messages above which satellite you are trying to receive. For Astra @28.2E you would need a very large dish for the UK beams. Best choice would be a DR.HD D15 or Tecnomate equivalent with a dish facing Intelsat 901 @27.5W. Although you need a receiver with a decoder the signal levels would be much more likely to work with a 1.2m dish.

I 've had issues with subtitles on BBC1 .
BBC1 London has very badly working subtitles,when BBC1 Scotland orBBC1 Wales work better,on FTA reception
My answer is to use BBC 1 scotland or wales,which have "both" subtitles available,
the bulky ones(Ceefax days,maybe?) and the nice ones,I use these when watching Masterchef,to get the spelling of exotic ingredients right,lol!
So,try various versions of BBC1!

Hi, you are very lucky to get that much of the UK beam on a 85cm. Towards north, Bergen, it was maybe 3-4 hours a day at the peak of levels with such a dish, no hd's and nothing in rain. Going for a 120-130 cm should serve you well for stable reception (weather, hd, sat levels fluctuations). Also stick on an extra lnb for 19e.

But as mentionned in other topic, levels have dropped in south France, am wondering if beam has shifted towards north, west\south Norway may have benefitted, will see when I go to Bergen.

I have used a black inverto LNB on my 0,85cm dish, it's also needed to fine tune the antenna. Using a beeper with analogue gauge for signal strength alignment does not work properly, as I suspect the BBC satellite gets drowned by the signal from the neighbour satellite in the constellation.

Are you sure this file will work 100% with my green PCB?

I have no idea what chips I have inside, I cannot read it. PCB has a version number.

Reason is, one person told be there is nothing to be done, but have no idea if the person has a clue.

I am very happy with the latest receiver with built in power supply just reveived. Works fair so far.

It is weird that most of Iceland could receive the UK beam transponders with a 60cm dish according to the satellite map displayed on Lynsat website.

According to the footprint map for the UK beam it reaches as far as the south west coast of Norway. A min 1.2m dish needed but you might/could go for 1.5m to allow for leeway.

I'm another 500 km to the east and get most BBC UK Beam channels on my 1.2. Apparently the signal strength does not fade linearly but there are high and low ripples.
