recording/playback functions on non sub SKY+ box

Sorry if this has been covered before,if it has i must have missed it.
Has SKY changed their policy on recording/playback functions on non sub SKY+ boxes?
I thought these functions were only enabled for SKY subscribers.
Yesterday i went to a customers house to install a Freewiev box..the box he was replacing with a freewiev box was an old SKY+ box he was using with an expired SKY card to wiev FTA channels.
When he told me he could record & playback on the old SKY+ box i didn't believe him but to my amazement the box did record/playback FTA channels.
When i came back top the shop i tried two other old SKY+ boxes if they also had these functions and they did...
Anyone have any thoughts on this? have i missed something here?

there does seem to be some issues where some FTV cards have been able to record and playback FTA chanenls on Sky+ boxes.
I have only noticed this happening very recently with a few cleints also - maybe it has something to do with the cardswap / encryption change?

If a SKy+ box is unplugged before the subscription is cancelled it will miss the "kill recording facility" commands. If it stays disconnected long enough the commands stop being sent and the box can be used as a fta recorder
