HI all its been a while, hopefully all you guys are still doing good.. I have been travelling now for some years and at the moment I'm on a vessel in West Africa just of the coast of Equatorial guinea, Cameroon and Nigeria. I have been asked to set up the satellite system as the crew of the vessel has no idea how to operate the system outside Europe. Okay so a couple of questions what is the best satellite for FTA channels here? I have six channels to output and about 90 guys looking at me for anything in English.

The system is set by GPS and im roughly about 8.2 E at present also reasonable static. Unsure of the actual size of the dish as I'm on nights but I'll look once awake..

Fire away with suggestions guys much appreciated. Hopefully free football time.

Chris

The only satellite I can remotely think of what would broadcast in English on your side of the world is 36E with DSTV package on it. It won't be FTA, barring maybe a couple of channels.

Not sure, but you may be able to pick up 7W NWA beam. MBC package shows a lot in English with Arabic subtitles

It may be better to look at several satellites with foot prints for your location at this site,
Code:
http://www.satbeams.com/footprints?norad=28187
this is one for Eutelsat 7A, it has several spot beams, in the pink and orange area at the top of the map. (Pink = C band, Orange = Ku band) The default one is for your location and is a kU band beam.

You can go through the list and find one with FTA channels, like this for Eutelsat 7A
Code:
http://www.satbeams.com/channels?norad=28187
then see if it is in the beam for your area, the channels have a listing that shows the transponder and beam location, look at this example.

7A.JPG

What I have circled is the beam for that channel.

However there will be limitations on some beams as they do not cover out to sea that good, you would need a satellite with a global beam, that type of beam covers the whole hemisphere that you would be in.

My Satellite Setup
Octagon Quad Optima OQSLO @ Laminas OFC-1100 @ Powertech DG-380 @ Vu+ Solo²(OpenATV) / Technotrend S2-1600
Sony KDL32W656A / TBS 6220 (DVB-C)
Terratec T-Stick+ (DAB+)
My Location
Stuttgart (48.79N/9.19E)
3 further propositions if we speak of strong Ku frequencies:
28.2E West Africa Beam
16E Sub Sahara Africa Beam
4.8E Africa Beam/5.0E SSA Beam

Each position gathers some FTA English speaking channels. But since I haven't watched any of them for a long time I cannot recommend which one to choose.

It might be helpful for you to get in contact with satellite enthusiasts from nearby countries:

You need a good UPS system, I can run for several days without power. (but I also have a standby generator)

My UPS works fine, it´s the local power co, Iberdrola and Telefonica that need the help, the 3G network went down and I had to use gprs!
There was a thread lately slagging off BT Openreach and others, but I bet they have UPS!

OK I lied, I dont bother with UPS as I know Spain doesn´t so what´s the point!

Yup, you mention the MBC package, some are Arabic only though and the only one I know that broadcasts 99% of the time with movies (some old but others very new) in English soundtrack is MBC2, which is why I chimed in with my 2 pennies worth about MBC2 on 7W
When in Morocco in January it was one of the only English language channels (channels showing original soundtrack if we must get picky) I could find on 7W or 26E apart from the BBC/CNN/Sky News channels that is.
The others that alternate between Arabic, French and English at times are MBC4 and MBC Action (so I learnt when I was under the footprint)

If I was in the OPs shoes or on his vessel and I was getting bugged for English Language TV I'd be looking at 7W, you could fill 3 of the channels up with news, MBC2, MBC4 and MBC Action on the other 3, that way atleast 4 of the 6 channels would be showing something in English most of the time (or even only 1 or 2 news and leave 1 or 2 channels to alternate between sports channels)

I can't really input much more as I only had access to 7W and 26E when I was there apart from mentioning the 15 to 20 or so FTA sports channels that are up there on 7W but as I don't really "do sports" I didn't take much notice of them
