The hard drive in my Thomson DSI8215 seemed to have failed - but was actually OK.
The Sky HD box had been erratic in operation for some time with the apparently well known symptoms of power supply failure ie No Sat Received messages, crashes needing power on reset, reinstall needed after coming out of standby and failed recordings. The last straw was when the box refused to start up (with the red light refusing to go green) despite doing resets and forced software updates. I installed a SatCure Relkit 33J ( and found that on testing 6 of the 15 replaced CapXon capacitors had half their supposed capacity and high ESRs). Following this the box still refused to turn on. I conected the hard drive (a WD 3000JS) to a PC and ran the Data Lifeguard Diagnostic program that can be downloaded from the Western Digital website. _http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=113&sid=3&lang=en My Book Studio Edition
Diagnostics showed no problem and I used the option to write 0s to the drive. The drive was replaced in the box which then worked perfectly. After reinstalling the blank drive there was no need to do any software download. The box just needed to be left switched on (power light red)for about 5 minutes after which the box could be restarted (power light goes green).
I previously thought that the various custom settings for the box were stored on hard disk but they are not. All the user setting such as default transponder, other channels and favourites were retained.
I have found that the setting for whether there are one or two LNBs needs to be set to one LNB if two channel recording is to work and this "feature" remained as it was.
