Yet another one of the pop icons from the late 60s has passed today. Mike is the third member of The Monkees to pop his clogs :( Just Mickey Dolenz left now.

Complete with trademark bobble hat - Last Train to Clarksville

If anyone wants to relive The Monkees both tv series are available on YT. It looks a terribly dated now but its interesting to relive those innocent days so long lost now.

Respected songwriter too. Linda Ronstadt singing Different Drum, written before Nesmith joined the Monkees.

I was fortunate enough to see the other three Monkees a few years ago. Sadly Mike had declined to join the tour although he apparently remained on good relations with the others.

Here is probably his most successful single, Rio, in what is arguably the first music video.

Always reminded me of some the 'out there' stuff from Terence Feely of The Persuaders, UFO and Space 1999 storylines.

As a self generating band, the Monkees could have sold far more than the 78-80 million records mentioned within their discography.
Their supervisor did not believe they could write, perform or fill concert halls like other bands of the time, thanks in part to the contract restrictions of the television show.

All four from memory composed and wrote lyrics and all were accomplished singers as well as good if not exceptional with the usual instruments a band would have on stage at the time.

Peter Tork for example, probably the one least expects to be behind the music

 
I think that Davy Jones was chosen for the programme purely because of his looks and that he was an actor. As such he had no musical abilities and started off with just shaking a pair of maracas. I think he learned to play the guitar later on (he might have played one on the tour I saw). Mickey Dolenz was given the drums, even though he couldn't play them, because Davey Jones was visually too small on camera.

Davey was proficient - enough - on bass guitar to cover for Peter. His ability to dance in time gave him an advantage as frontman despite being an ex-jockey in stature.


The band - once separated from their TV contract were fine with swopping places within the quartet, since all were able to sing in tune. Perhaps versatility and the inability to pigeonhole was the reason they weren't more successful.
