RIP Patrick McGoohan

Patrick Mcgoohan, 'Number Six' in the cult '60s Prisoner TV series, has died aged 80.

Although there were only 17 episodes of The Prisoner, it is still shown on many TV stations across the world.

I particularly relished his role as the brutal warder in the film 'Escape From Alcatraz', with Clint Eastwood.

I first caught The Prisoner on ITV (?) in the early 1980's. It was on lateish at night. Ive still got the videotapes of one of the reruns somewhere

Maybe I should put them onto DVD at some point. Should be interesting to see the old adverts

RIP Patrick, I still remember that car, was it a mini moke or something he used to jump into? The series 'The Prisoner' was iconic and no doubt there will be some tributes cobbled together very soon along with re-runs of his work.

Very sad, I was a big fan of Patrick before the Prisoner, as his Danger Man series was a family favourite, we never missed one.

Certainly gave a high profile to the Mini Mokes, but also the Lotus 7 in the title sequence of the Prisoner.

Have seen few episodes of The Prisoner in Black & White TV, but still was quite enjoyable.

Yes, super little car and I believe still being produced as the Caterham 7.

My brother in law did a race in a Caterham 7 as a reward for spotting at Rockingham and loved it

Gutted!.......Another episode in my life passes over! I really hate growing old, it p*ss's me off everytime when I hear a famous person that gave me great entertainment through my my life pops off !

As I recall the Lotus 7 used in The Prisoner (KAR120C) was sold to someone in Australia where, unfortunately, it was written off.

My own personal interpretation of the last two episodes was that McGoohan had been told that there wouldn't be a second series but had already started - hence the strange number of episodes. He hadn't got a proper ending sorted out that early in the series so had to rush something together.

I can remember the huge uproar that greeted the final episode as everyone wanted to know who Number 1 was. In the end it took me a further decade until the series was repeated, and I had a VCR, to work ou who was under the gorilla mask.

And of course more recently in Braveheart, as Edward Longshanks. The first film I remember him in is Hell Divers, think I saw it on TV in the 60s, it is also rumoured that he turned down Bond and the Saint.

True. As a Roman Catholic he was uncomfortable about the s_x scenes that playing Bond would entail.

Never heard that one before. Without checking on t'Internet I would have put The Saint and Danger Man as being made at roughly the same time.

Yep, sorry, a typo, Hell Drivers it was.

Reference the Saint, I believe that The Saint was after the first Danger Man series, which McGoohan didn't like doing, but he was then offered a second series by Lew Grade with more control and decided to go for it.
