Just got one today from Aldi and so far so good. Better than the previous cheapies from B&Q, Aldi and Screwfix circa 2010. Sharp picture on HD, records to FAT32 or NTFS. May have a problem with USB3 drives. Plays most files apart from Fortec P+ unless remuxed. Some of the files recorded from the 2010 cheapies look sharp, proving the HDMI was the weak picture link on those. Player has 'goto' and up to x32 FF&RW + A-B replay. Only works on some files.

This is a tiny box, about the size of a chunky stanav. No room on the back for the usb and power sockets so they're on the sides. No S/PDIF , no room for CAM. Works from 12v but both mains PSU and car socket supplied. Reasonably quick blind search. A bug with the 'favourites' button locks out the 'all' list, needs cycling through 'radio/tv' to unlock. Some problems with 'move' channel if channels are sorted. 'Newsat' defaults to commonest settings. Remote likes high angle, so sluggish if receiver is low down unless tipped upward. Still sluggish on some commands.

Had some glitchy recordings but not sure if broadcaster at fault. Will check further. One-touch record doesn't include ad-hoc timer. Portable kit comes in moulded box with 35mm metal dish, various mounts, cable, F-connectors, flat cable and sat finder. Nice inclinometer on dish. Will check out Diseq tomorrow if recordings ok.

Haven't checked the Diseq but checked the other bits worked. The sat finder is a bit insensitive, just makes noise ATT, used my audio pitch change finder, simpler but better.

Blind search on 19.2E took 13min and found 98 tp, 1022 tv and 156 radio, 13E took 7min found 103 tp, 1337 tv and 298 radio. Channels seemed to be saved in no logical order and can only be moved within 'all' channels, not per satellite. 'All' can be globally sorted.

Large recorded files show up as a single file in the PVR but are split at circa 500Mb, suffix .mts, .mts1, .mts2 etc., yet another different method. No OSD of HD screen res but recorded files display res and i/p in the info box. No OSD of signal strength just quality. Full EPG on most German channels but no page down on lists just on info.

Tried playing the split files on a media streamer after renaming to preserve .mts suffix. All played ok but with sequential gap. Tried playing back on the Ross but it hides all .mts files unless in the PVR 'HDPVR' folder in .mts, .mts1 etc. format. Tried renaming as .mts.001, .mts.002 etc. and joining with HJSplit, played ok in streamer then in Ross after rename to .ts to make visible in the Ross media player. Only 2x10min (>500Mb) files joined, will try later with more sections to check for audio/vid sync. Slight plus point for the 1/2Gb splits if power fails some video retrievable. Needs NTFS drive/partition to stitch <4Gb in W$.

Tried Diseq positioner but not enough power for Ross+positioner. Tried !2v Comag STB and positioner, ok. Tried Comag PSU on Ross but worse, positioner power on, but Ross dark. With Ross PSU splash screen cycling. Will try next with car plug and bigger 12v PSU for Ross+postioner.

Ross outputs HDMI HD *and* SCART HD>SD simutaneously inc. OSD, unlike Amiko SHD-7900 which omits OSD via SCART/composite.

If you mention a handful of the Channels you do get, we can soon tell you if you hit the right Satellite.

Hi and thanks for the help, I seem to be picking up 3 groups of satellites, here is a sample of the listings I have.

1. Astra 1H,1KR,1L,1M - RTE1 & 2, Really, TG4, BBC1 London, Various disney channels, loads of sky channels. QVC, alibi etc

2. Astra 2A,2B,2D, - BBC One HD, BBC 2 HD, ITV, Channel 5, NHK World HD, France 24, Euro news, Sky News, MATV National, True Movies, Horror channels.

3. Astra 1E, 1G, 3A, - Various BBC, ITV channels, more Disney channels, Home and Health, Discovery, Quest, Sky sports etc.

This is a small sample, and the satellites listed are what have been displayed on the screen by the reciever.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Paul.

Yes.

All those results are from the 28E (Sky, Freesat etc) position only.

The "Satellites" in your Receiver are fully editable Data Tables and mean nothing unless they are used in conjunction with true dish alignment to the self-same "Satellite". ie Your receiver has no idea where your dish is pointing ............ !

The same frequencies and other parameters are used repeatedly across the arc, so if your dish is aligned to 28E, not only can you ONLY get Channels from 28E, but if you scan a different "Satellite (eg Astra 1) then any results you get will be Channels from 28E that just happen to have similar parameters to some 19E Channels.

In order to verify what Satellite you are actually aligned to, look at the up-to-date Listings on Flysat, Lyngsat KingOfSat etc.

If you want to actually get Channels from other Satellites, you need to align the dish accordingly eg For Astra 1 @19E, move the dish 9 degrees further West and elevate it a degree or two.

Thanks Tivu,

I shall give that a try, it appears I am pointing in the wrong direction, I will see my mate for his satellite locator and set up again with that. All this to watch F1 on RTL LOL.

Many thanks for your help.

Paul.

You can do this without any locators (compass?). Just swing the dish a few cm's to the left when facing the dish and slightly up, until you get signal. 23.5E is quite strong as well, so you may hit this before 19.2.

Make sure you mark your original position with tipex or similar in case it goes wrong, so you can return to original position.

Please, has anyone found a PC based channel editor for the .DBM files used on this unit?
Thanks

I bought one of these as part of the Ross HD kit, having previously had an earlier kit whose receiver had untested and documented DiSEqC features. This one keeps up with the tradition, the manual referring to "Section 6 - Advance Installation" for positioning set-up, but that section is for "Recording", which should probably have been the missing Section 7.

Through trial and error, I managed to get it working on 4 satellites on my motorised installation, which has an Icecrypt DM101 (Moteck clone) with maximum drive current of 450mA. Here is the procedure that worked for me.

Choose satellite in Dish Setup menu, move right to settings and up/down to "motor"
Select DiSEqC 1.3. Press the green button to set location and enter latitude/longitude, then "OK" - these are saved in the box settings, not the database file.
Still on the "motor" selection, press "OK" to bring up the positioner menu, select "Goto X" and press right arrow, then "OK" to confirm. The motor should turn to the correct position. If a transponder was selected, the quality bar will indicate a signal.
Before leaving the menu, select "Store position", and press right arrow, then "OK" to confirm. If you don't do this, the motor will turn to another position when you exit the 1.3 menu, by a process I don't yet understand. [It's possible the box has been patched to just use DiSEqC 1.2 because the 1.3 doesn't work. There's no way to enter a position number in the 1.2 menu, so it might just use the satellite list number, and send the store command to the motor - I haven't checked to see if this has changed the positions used by my regular receiver.]

The PSU was OK for me. I did get the splash screen problem at one point, but reterminating the cable fixed the problem - icarusi might want to check his connection.

As for the editing software mentioned in another post, I find this can corrupt the database on saving, leaving some channels with incorrect transponder details, so it may not be 100% compatible. It may still be useful for checking channel details (SIDs, etc) which are not displayed on the box menus.

Does anyone else have the same problem as me??? I go to channel sort (so BBC 1 is on channel 1 ect). I follow everystep in the manual but if I put the unit on standby, when I turn it back on the channels are as they were before I sorted them into the order I wanted. Please someone help me..............I'm going round the bend with this!!

I don't have that Receiver, but is there not a "Press Ok to Save" or similar (in effect) step before exiting Edit Mode?

It happens with mine, but not on every standby cycle. I save the database after sorting and re-load as necessary from the permanently-connected USB stick.
I find that the sort order is lost after every scan, but couldn't pin down other causes. Since it's not just me, I'll drop a message to Ross Tech.Support. My software is CL472037 20120105 (presume that's 5th January).
There are some versions of an off-line database editor around, but they're only compatible for reading, not writing - the satellite/transponder relationships seem to get garbled.

I set up my motor this weekend and it all seems OK - even DiSEqC 1.3. 1.2 does seem to use the database order for position numbers, and there's no way to change these unless you edit each satellite entry, so it won't match up with any other equipment.

I can confirm that the box detects cable shorts - causing the flashing splash screen and LEDs.

Don't have mine switched on ATM but have mine set up for multi sats and it won't save re-orders of stations unless in the ALL setting. For multisats I select the first channel of each selected sat then switch to ALL and note the station number in the full list and sort stations relative to that number in the full list. Haven't updated the firmware recently but there was a bug locking the 'favourites' list until deselected by selecting 'radio' then back to TV.

What's your PSU rated at? Mine's 12v 1A (MassPower) (but may not be dlivering 1A when loaded). I was using the positioner next to the receiver with shortish cables, but I'll check it again, although the Amiko worked with the same cables.
