yep, they've announced that back in September. The Swiss versions will be on 19.2 only.

Cutting costs. I guess that 99% of all German speaking Swiss satellite viewers can reveive Astra 19.2 next to the Hotbird. It amazes me that the German version of the Swiss public broadcaster isn's receivable via Astra.

Satellite direct-to-home is not very important in Switzerland, over 80% use cable tv. The transmissions via 13 E were mainly used as satellite feeds to cable head ends. Swiss public TV use 13°E because it is much cheaper than Astra 19.2°E . And for less than 20% of their viewers, they do not want to afford Astra. It is also directed to Swiss expats - Swiss TV allows the smart cards to be used in foreign countries as well, as long the card holder is Swiss.

Indeed, I've got a card (although I'm not technically Swiss, sssh). As Hotbird has a wider beam it makes sense to use it.

I think ARD and ZDF will rather stay only on Astra or broadcasting other programs on Hotbird during the World Cup.

ARD are only there to broadcast to the German troops in Afghanistan. They already had left Hotbird, but came back after soldiers complained they couldnt watch down there. ZDF use Hotbird as a backup for the terrestrial network - similiar to the BBC on 27.5W. The stream is a direct copy from the DVB-T Mux.

Well for ARD probably because they are only there for the German troops stationed in Afghanistan, so any other viewers are pretty much irrelevant.

Once the German troops withdraw ARD will probably disappear off 13E

The HD transmission on 12.422h was not "official", it was always labelled a test broadcast. einsfestival only launched its regular HD service on 5th December together with a few other channels of ARD stations. I thought 11.053H was on 2C, like the other new transponder 10.891H ?
