Safety Guidelines for Dish Installation

Thought we'd better give some guidelines on what should and shouldn't be done safety wise.

When putting up your dish,
Always remember this,
If the wind is blowing strong,
The time is probably wrong.

When placing on your gable,
Your ladder must be stable,
If you have a friend,
Let them hold the bottom end.
If you are alone,
Then wedge it with a brick or stone.

When working with electrical tools
Follow all the simple rules.
The manual always teaches,
To check your cable reaches.

Be careful to drop nothing from height
Or your friend at the bottom may lose his sight!

Plan the job before you begin,
And you will always win.

If you are at all in doubt,
Let the experts sort it out!

And lets add never ever do any work on you dish unless you have 100% safe access to it and if you are up a ladder make sure there is someone around just in case you fall off. A small dish (or aerial) can act just like a sail if the wind catches it in the wrong way, and even a small dish will have you off a ladder if the wind gets behind it whilst you are off balance.

Always, always, think safety first. Its really not worth hurting yourself just for the sake of putting that new dish up instead of waiting a few days!

Since you are probably drilling holes in a wall why not drill your first one roughly 3/4 of the way up and fit a shield anchor with an eye. Then tie your ladder into the wall with that, using nylon rope. You will probably need to get at your dish again and you'll be glad you did. I also regard a ladder stand-off as an essential accessory.

Sorry m8 whats a "shield anchor" and a "ladder stand off", i can assume what they are but assumption is dangerous!!!

An eyebolt with sleeve anchor is I think what NickH is describing

you can use one to tie your ladder to the wall and then rope yourself to the top rung. A ladder stand off will add to the stability, I use the microlite, but a cheaper standard standoff will suffice.

Better still would be to hire a tower, then the whole thing will be like working at ground level, makes for an easy life.
