The Sagem unit under the TV has been working fine for a number of years (it can't receive the Sky News mux, but I can live with that). Even the wife has finally grasped the nettle and started using the recording facility.

The deferred facility is functioning but can anyone give me a reason why when in deferred mode it will not allow the material to then be recorded ?

It's down to who wrote the programming for the box. AFAIK it's only $ly's offerings which will backdate the start of a recording. It must work by either copying part of the buffered stream to the recorded programmes area or changing the pointers to the buffer somehow.

As $ly have almost complete control over their software the do it because they can!

I think that's right, Paul: Same problem exists with Foxsat HDR and the Humax Forums give that self-same explanation.

So at least there is one aspect of S ky boxes which is not cr*p!

Are you suggesting it's a patented idea that nobody else can use without paying ?

Not suggesting that at all. Merely that $ly can do it because they write most of their firmware in house and can control what goes where on the hard disk. Again AFAIK $ly use their own operating system, or at least not on a Linux base, whereas all the others are. err, Linux based.
