I've been asked to check a faulty Samsung DVR camera system, which looks dead according to the client.

From first impression over the phone the power supply is at fault, though the manual mentions little apart from it being a 12V stepdown terminating with a four wire connector.
Question is, is there a specific power out on these things, ie 12V goes only to one of the four ports, in order to power up the unit from another supply (I don't have a problem hacking into the cable if the smps is dead), or am I looking at a bespoke design with a unique pin connection out for this DVR ?

From the pic, that looks like a pretty common PSU o/p connector that used to be used for many USB 2 external 3.5" hard drive enclosures, with 2x 0V and 1x 12V and 1x 5V +ve pins, about 5yrs ago! - I threw away several possibly appropriate PSU's a few days ago, but I may still have one around (although that's a remote possibility)!
PS: the PSU's that I threw away were on one of the shelves above that TM when you came over here 3 weeks ago :)

Thanks. The apparent rating for the Samsung is 12v x 2 on the pins (and I think 0 x 2 on the others). It was more a question over the connector type itself, whether there is a protocol for the pin polarity based on orientation.

I do have a redundant psu here with the same end connector, but it has 1 x 12v and 1 x 5v. I would consider cutting into the lead to isolate the 5v and bridge the 12v, but if the pins are different at the end then it won’t help me on site.
 
It could be that the connectors on the PSU's that I had did have 2 pins at each voltage, but unfortunately I threw them out as I said (I checked a few minutes ago and there aren't any left here) and so I can't confirm the pin-outs. BTW they were widely used on enclosures for IDE drives, but disappeared when SATA drives became widely used.

Also, there appear to have been 2 versions of that type of connector, one with thick pins (like the Samsung) and one with thin pins and some of those had 2x 12V and 2x 5V rails (and with the shell as the 0V rail, but I couldn't find any of the thick pin type now for sale on ebay, just now.
 
FWIW, would it be possible to open up the camera to check the connections inside that, &/or do an ohm-meter check to find which of the input pins is/are connected to the chassis?
 
Its a multiplex DVR, but yes, when I get to site I will open it up (unless the issue lies elsewhere).

My understanding of the PSU pins comes from a general search for online replacements, the operating instructions mention nothing about pins, or even the step down voltage, just the power requirement.

They use 2 pairs as a normal axial dc jack cannot supply enough current reliably.
Both 12v will come from the same place internally in the PSU, off the same rail.

Yes external hard drive ones were +5 and +12, that was the only reason for using a 4 pin din.

And with regards to polarity, most are the same but that's not to say they all are!
