Hi everyone. Just scored another one of these from Ebay. Last week I bought a working one from a car boot sale and now this. Have a total of three now. I'm going to put this one in my studio/radio room because I can't get away with using the Sagemcom Freesat+ as I only have one cable from the dish - it must have two for full PVR function. Got three working old Sky cards so why not? :)

Should have mentioned that it is costing me a total of £10.89 which is not bad at all. That's 99p for the box and £9.90 postage. :D

The cards referred to are the old "blue" cards which when they replaced them with the current white ones did not have the Sky+ features turned off - current white cards have an "expiry date" on Sky+ features and thus will not work. The old blue cards had to have been replaced with new white ones AND have Sky+ sub active on them - cancelled sub cards do NOT work.

There has been a change on the latest software on the Sky/Amstrad DRX 890/895 boxes which seems tto look for an "expiry date" and if it does not find them it will not allow Sky+ features to work and these "blue" cards will not work on these boxes but at present continue to work in other HD+ boxes. I have two such cards which work in my Pace and Thomson boxes but not in my DRX890s.

It will probably only be a matter of time before a firmware update will disable them on the non DRX890/895 boxes. The firmware appears to look for an "expiry date" against the Sky+ sub (rather than looking for the "valid" flag) and if it doesn't find one then no Sky+ features something that should be relatively easy for them to code on the other boxes although they possibly may not get the full R11 firmware.

R11 update kills the Sky+ feature using old blue cards on the DRX890/895. Samsung, Pace, Thomson and Amstrad DRX780 won't get the R11 updates.

They do not have to get the full R11 upgrade merely an upgrade to the "subscription decoding" part - which is highly likely with the new cards which are due in the near future. In which case the only boxes that will continue to work will be the Thomson.

Dave, I think it's a case of wait and see. It appears that Sky are now only interested in the 890/895 series of boxes. It could be for a number of reasons. If the older ones stop recording, well, I shall have to bite the bullet and get a decent Freesat+ machine. But, until then.......:D

Anyway, I took delivery of the box and found it to have firmware R003! Obviously not been used for a long time. So today I am going to put a 500gb drive in instead of the 320gb (getting quite good at this now). Update the firmware (R010) and put it to one side ready for use later. :D

Right! Well, I bought this box to be used with an old blue card to use as a PVR, I didn't try it with a current card with a subscription. Sorry!

Great job there, Chris! At the back end of June, I also will be telling Sky where they can shove their services. Actually, I'm sending them a letter via registered post. That way someone has to sign for it. Then I shall be free!!!
